The Rusted Tankard

The Rusted Tankard opened twelve years ago at the edge of a merchant quarter, founded by a traveling pit-fighter who stayed when the town's coin kept him longer than the road. Over the years it earned a reputation as the place where shipments arrive late, debts are collected informally, and newcomers learn the local rules the hard way. A brawl in year five burned one corner of the roof; the landlord rebuilt it with the same stubbornness that keeps the tavern lively. The building has been through two owners, one short-lived arson attempt, and more sealed deals than the local magistrate would like to admit.

History

The Rusted Tankard opened twelve years ago at the edge of a merchant quarter, founded by a traveling pit-fighter who stayed when the town's coin kept him longer than the road. Over the years it earned a reputation as the place where shipments arrive late, debts are collected informally, and newcomers learn the local rules the hard way. A brawl in year five burned one corner of the roof; the landlord rebuilt it with the same stubbornness that keeps the tavern lively. The building has been through two owners, one short-lived arson attempt, and more sealed deals than the local magistrate would like to admit.

Quirks

Every new patron must buy a 'first-round' shot for the table or face a chorus of boos and playful jeers. The landlord keeps a battered copper bell behind the bar - if rung once it calls the staff, twice and the house steps in to break a fight, three times and Tib the Tall appears to settle matters himself. The jukebox of the age is a drunken bard named Lyle who refuses to play requests he dislikes.

Lore

Locals say the tavern got its name when the original owner returned from a merchant voyage carrying a dented iron tankard that always seemed to come back full. Superstition holds that the first drop of ale poured into that tankard brings a night's fortune if drunk in the common room. Old-timers also claim that a faded sigil carved under the bar is the mark of a forgotten thieves' guild - more gossip than proof, but a few people who treated the rumor lightly vanished for weeks before paying their debts.
