The Hearth & Half-Moon Inn

The Hearth & Half-Moon Inn opened thirty-four years ago when a retired caravanmaster bought two adjoining cottages at Stoneford Bridge and joined their kitchens. It grew by word of good stew and honest beds. During the winter of year 18 since founding the inn held the town during a flood and sheltered refugees from three nearby villages. That act made the inn a local meeting point for travellers and the occasional clandestine deal. The inn survived a small fire twenty years after opening that burned the northern wing; the charred beams were kept and hung above the bar as a reminder.

History

The Hearth & Half-Moon Inn opened thirty-four years ago when a retired caravanmaster bought two adjoining cottages at Stoneford Bridge and joined their kitchens. It grew by word of good stew and honest beds. During the winter of year 18 since founding the inn held the town during a flood and sheltered refugees from three nearby villages. That act made the inn a local meeting point for travellers and the occasional clandestine deal. The inn survived a small fire twenty years after opening that burned the northern wing; the charred beams were kept and hung above the bar as a reminder.

Quirks

A soot-black cat named Ledger insists on sleeping on the guest ledger and will paw at pages until offered a scrap. The fireplace occasionally produces harmless sparks that form simple images at night when the moon is high. The innkeep writes a weekly haiku and pins it to the noticeboard. Patrons who tip with a copper often receive an extra biscuit in their stew.

Lore

Locals murmur that the inn stands on the remains of an older waystation once dedicated to a forgotten road saint. Some barrels in the cellar are said to have been filled by a traveling priest who blessed their contents; the wine from those barrels is prized by superstitious patrons who swear it eases fever and bad luck. The Half-Moon in the name points to a carved lunette above the main doorway, carved from the mast of a ship in the founding caravanmaster's youth.
