The Noble's Rest

Founded thirty years ago by a retired steward to House Calder, the Noble's Rest began as a safe house for traveling minor nobility and estate agents. It gained a reputation for discretion after sheltering an exiled heir during a succession dispute. Over time the inn was extended to suit dignitaries: private suites, a sealed parlor for treaty drafting, and a ledger room for verifying claims. The current keeper bought the property twelve years ago and modernized the kitchens and baths while preserving the old carved beams and family crests of long-time patrons.

History

Founded thirty years ago by a retired steward to House Calder, the Noble's Rest began as a safe house for traveling minor nobility and estate agents. It gained a reputation for discretion after sheltering an exiled heir during a succession dispute. Over time the inn was extended to suit dignitaries: private suites, a sealed parlor for treaty drafting, and a ledger room for verifying claims. The current keeper bought the property twelve years ago and modernized the kitchens and baths while preserving the old carved beams and family crests of long-time patrons.

Quirks

Guests arriving without a crest must present a handshake token acquired from the front steward; the token is a simple carved bone bead. The house cat, a large grey tom called Ledger, perches on the heraldic ledger and will refuse to move unless offered a scrap of fish. The tavern enforces a rule of no drawn blades inside; those who break it are locked in the parlor until dawn and their weapon held in the strongroom.

Lore

Locals say the north beam in the main hall was carved from a single oak felled the winter the inn opened and bears a faint rune that none admit to carving. Housekeepers claim the rune was merely a mason's mark, but old retainers swear it wards the property against mundane theft. The inn holds provisional recognition among several city houses as a neutral site for arbitration, a status that keeps city watch from interfering directly so long as no blood is drawn within the walls.
