The Fieldstone Boar

Built just three seasons ago by a pair of local stonemasons and a retired roadwarden, the roadhouse sits where two dirt lanes meet the main drover road. Locals say the masons quarried the fieldstone from the nearby ridge and the timbers came from an old mill. It replaced a burned-out lean-to and quickly became a hub for drovers, field hands, and the occasional merchant caravan. The building is new enough that the mortar still smells faintly of lime, but weather and a thousand boots have already given it character.

History

Built just three seasons ago by a pair of local stonemasons and a retired roadwarden, the roadhouse sits where two dirt lanes meet the main drover road. Locals say the masons quarried the fieldstone from the nearby ridge and the timbers came from an old mill. It replaced a burned-out lean-to and quickly became a hub for drovers, field hands, and the occasional merchant caravan. The building is new enough that the mortar still smells faintly of lime, but weather and a thousand boots have already given it character.

Quirks

The tavern polishes a single dented iron mug at closing and places it on the hearth ledge as an offering to travelers. Regulars believe it keeps the road fair. The house ale is served in mismatched tankards stamped with small boar or wheel marks. The owner plays a short, thin whistle when a fight is about to start; it is a cue for patrons to back away or join in. The dog chained by the hearth, called Knuckle, is more interested in stolen crusts than in brawls and will steal a boot left unattended.

Lore

Locals call the place the Fieldstone Boar, named for the carved boar's head set above the lintel. Rumor says the carving was meant to ward the road, not the building, and that those who sleep under the boar's gaze dream of the road they must travel. Superstitious drovers leave a pinch of salt on the sill before a long trip. A faded symbol beneath the boar, a simple wheel and star, marks the roadhouse as once visited by the roadwarden guild, though no official member has been seen in years.
