The Greasy Biscuit

Founded eight years ago by Hest Buckrow, a former caravan guard who turned his back on the road after a skirmish left him with a limp and a distrust of inns run by nobles. He converted an old crossroads coaching inn into a refuge for wandering blades and hungry feet. Over the years it became known as the place to find work, gossip, and greasy biscuits that keep one awake on the road. Hest keeps the books and the door, and the tavern has survived a small fire, a rent increase from a passing baron, and one full-scale kobold raid.

History

Founded eight years ago by Hest Buckrow, a former caravan guard who turned his back on the road after a skirmish left him with a limp and a distrust of inns run by nobles. He converted an old crossroads coaching inn into a refuge for wandering blades and hungry feet. Over the years it became known as the place to find work, gossip, and greasy biscuits that keep one awake on the road. Hest keeps the books and the door, and the tavern has survived a small fire, a rent increase from a passing baron, and one full-scale kobold raid.

Quirks

Patrons have a habit of tossing a biscuit to seal deals or bets. The floor is perpetually slick with old gravy; patrons who dance (or fight) often slip. A mangy tavern hound named Clip patrols knees for dropped food and stolen coin. Hest rings a bent iron ladle 'The Call' to announce brawls, meals, or new jobs.

Lore

Locals whisper that the tavern sits on a ley-crossing where travelers' luck is both made and squandered; some say the biscuits are especially filling because Hest uses a pinch of an old family spice said to 'stiffen the heart.' There is an old story of a buried chest beneath the hearthstone, placed there by a grateful caravan master — nobody has been allowed to pull the hearth up since Hest's first night. The tavern is also a known waypoint for low-tier guilds and merc networks that trade favors for coin and song.
