Moonleaf Hearth

The Moonleaf Hearth began as a hollow beneath the roots of an old madrin tree where a wandering wood-elf bard sheltered tired travelers. Over two centuries the hollow was expanded into a cozy inn by the village of Larethil as roads became safer and trade with neighboring human hamlets grew. It has changed hands only three times, each keeper an elf who cared more for stories than profit. The Hearth has helped broker minor disputes, hidden refugees in a storm, and sheltered scholars while they copied fading scripts. A faint ward placed long ago keeps the cellar cool and prevents vermin from breeding; the ward is maintained by the current keeper with careful songs rather than obvious wizardry.

History

Quirks

Guests are encouraged to leave one short memory on a strip of bark and slide it into the memory-box beneath the hearth. The innkeeper reads a random memory aloud on quiet evenings, and the story told tends to influence who dreams what that night. Staff speak a little in song more than is common, humming lines that change slightly depending on the moon phase. Coins left as tips are arranged into patterns overnight; no one has seen who arranges them, but the patterns sometimes mirror local constellations.

Lore

Local elven lore holds that Moonleaf Hearth sits where the root of a madrin tree first took hold on a ley line crossing. The madrin is said to be a 'listening root' that remembers names spoken under its leaves. Older elves claim the hearth's slow flame is fed by moonlight and memory rather than common fuel; new moon nights are especially favored for remembering lost names. The inn is not a formal temple but is treated as neutral ground. Travelers who sleep there often wake with a sense of mild clarity and dreams that suggest forgotten paths.
