The Mooring Lantern

The Mooring Lantern began as a single lantern hung over a fisherman's shed two generations ago to guide in small skiffs. Marrek bought the rundown shack 18 years ago after an aborted privateering run and expanded it into a stout tavern that could handle crews and modest cargo. Over time it became a waypoint for merchant convoys and the unofficial exchange for jobs and favors on the docks.

History

The Mooring Lantern began as a single lantern hung over a fisherman's shed two generations ago to guide in small skiffs. Marrek bought the rundown shack 18 years ago after an aborted privateering run and expanded it into a stout tavern that could handle crews and modest cargo. Over time it became a waypoint for merchant convoys and the unofficial exchange for jobs and favors on the docks.

Quirks

Marrek taps only three times on the bar to call the room to attention; whoever answers the fourth tap earns a free round (used mainly to break fights). A carved merfolk figure above the hearth 'winks' (a loose eye in the carving) whenever lies are told loudly enough.

Lore

Local sailors whisper that the original lantern was fashioned from a piece of a washed-up lantern said to have belonged to a ghostly pilot who once guided lost ships back to shore. Some claim the carving above the hearth is not merely decorative: sailors who trim the lantern's wick and leave a coin for the sea-wight will find calmer waters the next morning. The Gray Eel, a shadowy ship name now appearing in Marrek's ledger, was once rumored to be a phantom smuggler that ran cursed cargo — whether that curse returns is for the party to decide.
