The Condensed Flask
Tavern
Guards, mercenaries, journeyman smiths, and weary travelers.
Deep within the cramped, shadowy confines of the Katochora, The Condensed Flask is a beacon of warmth and noise for Kure's poorest citizens. The tavern is a ramshackle, three-story structure built from a patchwork of scavenged materials—mismatched stone blocks, splintered timbers, and sheets of rusted metal—all wedged precariously between the colossal foundations of two of the city's grander buildings. The entire structure is coated in a mixture of grime and the pale ashen dust that filters down from the city above, giving it a perpetually dirty, grey appearance.
The tavern earns its name from the massive, tarnished Cobalt pipe that runs down its facade. Illegally tapped from one of the city's main geothermal conduits, the pipe is poorly insulated and constantly hisses, venting clouds of hot, sulfurous-smelling steam into the narrow alley. Condensation drips constantly from its leaky joints, adding to the mud and filth on the street below. This captured steam is the tavern's only source of heat, making it a powerful draw for the cold and destitute.
The entrance is a single, heavy door of battered, mismatched planks reinforced with scrap metal, with only a small, barred porthole to see through. Even from the alley, the muffled sounds of shouting, coarse laughter, and the occasional brawl can be heard. The air around the tavern is a thick soup of steam, smoke from a poorly-vented kitchen, and the smell of stale ale. It is not a welcoming place, but for the rowdy, downtrodden citizens of the Katochora, its steam-warmed walls offer a vital and much-needed refuge from the cold reality of their lives.
