Phandalin is a rough frontier town built upon the ancient ruins of a much larger settlement. Normally, it is a bustling hub for prospectors seeking fortune in the nearby hills. Today, the scene is one of devastation. Thatch roofs are ablaze, black smoke billows into the sky, and the scent of pine is replaced by the stench of burning wood. Villagers scramble for water or flee toward the woods while buildings crumble into embers.

Centuries ago, Phandalin was a prosperous human settlement allied with dwarves and gnomes. An orc horde razed it to the ground, leaving it abandoned for ages. Recently, settlers from distant cities arrived to rebuild, reclaiming the stone ruins to forge a new life. This rebirth has been met with constant threats from bandits and monsters lurking in the crags, culminating in the current disastrous raid.
