Appearance
Barristan is a barrel chested hill dwarf with skin the color of tanned leather, covered from head to toe in jagged white scars. He wears no shirt or tunic, only loose fitting dark wool trousers tucked into sturdy boots. His jet black hair and beard are thick, bushy, and wild, though his eyes remain sharp and focused. He carries a lightweight rapier that looks odd in his meaty grip, paired with a massive, battle scarred shield.
Mannerisms
Barristan has a habit of flexing his pectoral muscles when he is thinking, and he often taps a rhythmic beat on his shield with the pommel of his rapier when he grows impatient.
Personality
Barristan is surprisingly light on his feet for a dwarf of his size, possessing a jovial but fierce spirit. He finds the structure of military life suffocating and now lives for the chaos of the fray. He speaks with a booming voice and laughs off injuries that would fell a lesser man, seeing every new scar as a badge of survival.
Ideals
Freedom. No person or law should ever restrict the movement of a soul or a body.
Bonds
I still carry the shield of the captain who died beside me at Blackspire, the only piece of my old life I refuse to leave behind.
Flaws
I am addicted to the adrenaline of nearly dying, often purposefully letting attacks land just to prove I can take them.
Quirks
Background
Barristan was once a decorated sergeant in the Iron-Grip Phalanx, an elite dwarven infantry unit known for their impenetrable shield walls and heavy plate armor. During the Siege of Blackspire, Barristan felt the weight of his steel cage becoming a death trap. As the enemy breached the gate, he tore off his breastplate, discarded his heavy warhammer, and snatched up a fallen officer's rapier. In a primal fit of clarity and fury, he danced through the breach, parrying blows with his shield and delivering precise stabs to vital gaps in enemy armor. Though he saved his company, his superiors viewed his behavior as a dereliction of discipline and a descent into madness. He was discharged with honors but told never to return to the phalanx. Now he wanders as a mercenary, seeking the thrill of the fight without the stifling weight of tradition or chainmail. He has embraced his natural toughness, trusting his thick skin and his reflexes over any forged steel.
