Appearance
Timothy Wincklehorn III is a lanky human man with an ink-stained collar, perpetually wind-tossed brown hair, and alert hazel eyes that seem to be measuring the angle of every doorway. He dresses in practical wizard's robes layered over a scholar's shirt, with a quarterstaff polished smooth from years of nervous tapping. His spellbook is lovingly overstuffed with bookmarks, marginal notes, and scraps of parchment tied in place with twine.
Mannerisms
He speaks as though he is perpetually footnoting reality, often starting sentences with, "Strictly speaking," or "By my notes,". When excited, he taps his staff against the floor in a quick double rhythm, as if punctuating invisible paragraphs.
Personality
Curious, droll, and fearless in the face of academic authority, Timothy treats every mystery like a friendly argument waiting to be won. He is generous with help, stingy with caution, and absolutely convinced that a good question can be more dangerous than a sword.
Ideals
Truth should be found, shared, and used to free people from lies. Knowledge is not a trophy for the powerful, it is a lantern for everyone stumbling through the dark.
Bonds
He keeps his great-grandfather's ring of signet wax in a little cloth pouch, a reminder that his family once believed knowledge should serve the powerless. He is determined to recover the lost Library of Vhal, or at least one surviving catalogue page from it, because he believes too many lives were erased along with its shelves.
Flaws
He cannot resist correcting people, even in the middle of danger, and he will chase a promising clue long after prudence has begged him to stop. When someone claims an authority is beyond question, Timothy hears a personal challenge and acts accordingly.
Quirks
Background
Timothy Wincklehorn III was born to a family of minor antiquarians who expected him to become the respectable, boring sort of scholar who never trespassed, never lied, and never upset a ledger. He tried valiantly to fit that mold, but the first time he uncovered a marginal note in a ruined chronicle that contradicted three accepted histories, he became hopelessly, gleefully doomed to curiosity. He spent his youth haunting archives, monastery libraries, and sealed vaults, copying impossible diagrams and arguing with professors who told him to stop asking dangerous questions. The more his tutors insisted that truth was fixed, the more Timothy suspected that truth was merely a polite arrangement among people too timid to challenge it. His studies eventually led him to wizardry, first as a practical way to keep himself alive while trespassing through forgotten places, then as a philosophy of its own. He discovered that magic answered the same questions he had always asked of history, language, and myth, only louder. As his spellbook grew, so did his habit of poking into the sealed, the forbidden, and the inconvenient. Now he wanders as a Chaotic Good sage, using his brilliance to liberate truths from tombs, tyrants, and anyone else who thinks knowledge should have a lock on it. He is still, by his own admission, a terrible guest at formal dinners, but an invaluable ally when a riddle, a ruin, or a relic stands between the world and some buried cruelty.
“He discovered that magic answered the same questions he had always asked of history, language, and myth, only louder.”
