Appearance
A compact, broad-shouldered stout halfling woman with copper-red hair usually braided into two practical loops beneath her helm. Her weather-browned skin is freckled across the nose and forearms, and her hands are unusually noticeable, with thickened palms, split knuckles, and short, clean nails worn down by years of shield work, reins, rope, and weapon drills. She stands with a grounded, quietly watchful posture, often positioning herself between strangers and the nearest door.
Mannerisms
Taviea checks doors, straps, and exits whenever she enters a room. While listening, she rests two fingers against the rim of her shield. When she makes a promise, she taps her left wrist once, as if marking the beginning of a watch.
Personality
Taviea is calm, observant, and unexpectedly tender with frightened people. She speaks in short practical sentences, remembers everyone's preferred name, and becomes almost unnervingly still when deciding whether someone is a threat. She has little patience for grand speeches, but she will spend hours repairing another person's gear without being asked.
Ideals
Protection is a promise, not a privilege. The frightened and powerless deserve the same shield as the rich and well-connected.
Bonds
The families of the old hill road still send her small letters and practical gifts. She considers their safety a debt that can never be fully repaid, and she will risk herself to protect anyone who reminds her of them.
Flaws
She cannot leave a direct plea unanswered, even when the request is manipulative, strategically foolish, or clearly beyond her ability. She also treats compromise as a form of cowardice when someone vulnerable is being used as leverage.
Quirks
Background
Taviea Kuulas grew up where the road narrowed between wet hills and a chain of wind-bent watchposts. Her family kept pack goats, repaired harness, and carried messages for the local garrison, so she learned early that protection was rarely dramatic. It was checking a buckle before the climb, walking on the exposed side of a child, and noticing which traveler had begun to look over their shoulder too often. When raiders came through one autumn, Taviea held a garden gate long enough for three families to reach the watch bell. The soldiers who arrived afterward remembered the small woman with the splintered spear and offered her a place in the guard. She served for fifteen years, first as a gate sentry, then as a road warden trusted with escort duty. Taviea became known for a particular promise: if someone asked for protection plainly and without cruelty, she would give it until the danger had passed. That promise finally put her at odds with her commander when a wealthy magistrate demanded that the guard abandon a group of displaced miners to protect his private convoy. Taviea refused, shielded the miners through the night, and left the garrison before her refusal could be made into a public trial. Now she travels as a hired adventurer, seeking honest work and people whose pleas have been ignored, while quietly collecting evidence that the magistrate's influence reaches farther than it should.
