Appearance
Voolag is a towering goliath with slate-gray skin, a broad, heavily muscled frame, and close-cropped black hair bound with iron rings. He wears dark plate armor whose edges are stained in blood-red lacquer, marked with the stylized open jaw of his former cult. His warhammer is thick-headed and scarred from years of execution work, and his shield bears no heraldry except a vertical red line. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice that Voolag rarely looks at faces. He studies hands, weapons, exits, and the spaces between people. He smells faintly of cold iron, lamp oil, and bitter incense, a combination he considers perfectly clean.
Mannerisms
Voolag stands perfectly still when listening, with his shield held vertically at his side. He addresses people by title until they prove they deserve a personal name. Before making a judgment, he taps the face of his warhammer three times against his shield. He speaks in measured declarations, rarely raising his voice, and pauses to inspect every doorway before entering a room.
Personality
Voolag is restrained, formal, and intensely observant. He speaks as though every sentence might later be entered into a legal record. He has a dry, unexpectedly literal sense of humor and shows affection through practical acts, such as repairing armor, standing watch, or silently placing food within reach. He does not seek admiration, but he notices precisely who is protected when others are praised.
Ideals
Law. Power must be bound by rules, witnessed by others, and answerable to the people it governs. A law that exists only to feed its masters is not order, it is predation.
Bonds
The three mountain settlements ruined by the Cult of the Jaw are under Voolag's protection. He sends them coin, supplies, and warnings whenever he can. He also keeps the broken command tablet of his former superior, intending to place it beneath the altar of a lawful god once the cult is finally destroyed.
Flaws
Voolag confuses obedience with virtue when under pressure. He is slow to question a clear order, especially if it comes from someone who speaks with institutional authority. Once he decides that a person is dangerous, he becomes coldly punitive and may overlook mercy, negotiation, or the possibility of change.
Quirks
Background
Voolag Deathcarver Armk was once the Lesser Commander of the Cult of the Jaw, a militant sect that believed all authority must eventually consume what lay beneath it. Among the cult, Voolag was valued for his discipline rather than his zeal. He kept the ranks in order, delivered judgments without hesitation, and taught that a sworn command mattered more than comfort, affection, or even fear. His goliath upbringing had already taught him to measure worth through endurance and responsibility, and the cult gave those lessons a cruel vocabulary. He left the Cult of the Jaw after discovering that its highest leaders had engineered a famine in three mountain settlements to provoke a war they could exploit. Voolag obeyed the order to seize the first settlement, then broke ranks when he saw children wearing the cult's jaw-mark carved into their ration tokens. He turned his warhammer against the cult's officers, destroyed the command tablets, and surrendered himself to a temple of Tyr. The priests expected repentance. Instead, they found a man who wanted law without appetite, authority without corruption, and punishment that served the living rather than the powerful. He became an acolyte, then swore the Oath of Vengeance against the surviving masters of the Cult of the Jaw. Voolag now travels as a grim protector, hunting the cult's agents while trying to prove that order can exist without becoming another mouth waiting to devour the weak.
