Appearance
Isabelle is a broad-shouldered dwarf woman standing just under five feet tall, with copper-brown skin, ash-blonde hair braided with tiny iron rings, and keen gray eyes. Her most immediately noticeable possession is an old border-guard cloak clasp, a blackened silver mountain shaped like a split peak. The clasp is polished bright only where her thumb repeatedly rubs it while thinking. She wears fitted leather armor beneath a weather-darkened traveling coat, with a shortsword at her hip and a shortbow carried across her back. She moves with compact confidence, taking up more space than her height suggests, and rarely sits with her back to a door.
Mannerisms
Isabelle rubs the bright-worn edge of her mountain clasp whenever she is thinking. Before entering a room, she silently counts exits and windows. When angry, she becomes very polite, speaking in the calm tone she once used to question incompetent officers.
Personality
Isabelle is direct, observant, and fiercely protective. She has the practical warmth of someone who has spent years feeding frightened travelers, repairing patrol gear, and bringing injured guards home through bad weather. She enjoys stories, especially embellished ones, but interrupts only when a storyteller gets the important parts wrong. Her chaotic nature appears in her refusal to accept that custom, rank, or prophecy should outweigh an individual's right to choose.
Ideals
No future is fixed. People deserve the chance to choose their own path, and anyone who tries to take that choice from the vulnerable has made an enemy of me.
Bonds
Cynder, Eros, and Faith are the center of Isabelle's world. She will risk reputation, rank, wealth, and even her life to keep her family and the vulnerable people of the Ceviche Mountains safe.
Flaws
Isabelle becomes reckless when someone reminds her of the helplessness she felt during the first warnings of the coming calamity. She distrusts prophecy, elders, and anyone who speaks with absolute certainty, and her refusal to accept authority can turn a solvable dispute into a dangerous one.
Quirks
Background
Isabelle Wikstrom grew up in the Ceviche Mountains, where narrow passes, sudden storms, and hungry predators taught her that strength meant little unless it was placed between danger and someone who could not face it alone. She joined the Ceviche border guard as soon as she was old enough, learning to patrol cliff roads, read hostile tracks, and strike decisively from cover. Her training made her patient rather than obedient. She followed orders when they protected people, and questioned them when they protected only pride, profit, or tradition. Every autumn, Isabelle attended the performances of the Firefly Dance Troupe. During one such visit, she met Cynder, a storyteller and performer whose tales held her attention long after the music stopped. She appeared for every performance thereafter, though it took four years of courtship before she agreed to marry him, fearing that marriage meant abandoning her home to join the troupe. Instead, Cynder stayed in the village, and they built a happy life together. Their children, Eros and Faith, became Isabelle's greatest treasures. When Eros's prophetic gift emerged, Isabelle taught him that the future was a warning, not a sentence, and gave him her blessing when he eventually chose to travel. After the village elders warned that a calamity was stirring, Isabelle left home to uncover the threat before it reached her family. Her border-guard discipline combined with a rogue's precision makes her an expert at infiltration, ambushes, and removing the one danger everyone else failed to notice.
“Her training made her patient rather than obedient.”
