Appearance
Throk is a broad-shouldered half-orc with gray-green skin, a square jaw, and thick black hair tied into a short topknot with a strip of faded red cloth. His lower tusks are carefully polished, and he wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a blue surcoat that is slightly too short in the sleeves. His shield is patched with mismatched leather straps and bears the painted symbol of a sheaf of wheat. He stands very still when listening, taking up more space than he seems aware of, then moves with surprising gentleness around animals and children.
Mannerisms
Throk pauses before answering difficult questions and rubs his thumb along the edge of his shield. He speaks in short, practical sentences, lowers his voice rather than raising it when angry, and automatically positions himself between strangers and the nearest exit. When nervous, he checks the knots on his gear even when they are already secure.
Personality
Throk is steady, observant, and more compassionate than his severe expression suggests. He prefers useful action to emotional display, but he remembers every kindness and repays it with interest. Around strangers he is quiet and imposing, while around farm animals he becomes patient, conversational, and oddly playful. He has little interest in fame, yet he secretly treasures being recognized as dependable.
Ideals
Protection. Strength is a loan from the people who helped raise you. Spend it where it does the most good, and never confuse authority with worth.
Bonds
The people of his flood-struck village gave Throk his first real sense of belonging. He will return whenever they call, and he carries a small iron nail from the rebuilt bridge as a reminder that protection is a task, not a title.
Flaws
Throk distrusts anyone who speaks beautifully about virtue but avoids unpleasant work. He can become stubbornly judgmental, especially toward nobles, commanders, and priests who ask others to make sacrifices they would not make themselves. Once he decides someone is a coward, he struggles to revise that opinion.
Quirks
Background
Throk was born in a farming settlement where half-orcs were treated with suspicion until a spring flood broke the riverbank and swept away the village bridge. Still young and scarcely trained, he waded into the current with a rope around his waist, hauled two trapped families to safety, and spent the next three days helping rebuild the embankment. The villagers remembered his strength, but more importantly, they remembered that he stayed after the danger passed. From then on, they trusted him with the work that needed doing and the promises that needed keeping. A traveling paladin recognized the discipline beneath Throk's blunt manner and taught him the rites of a warrior devoted to honorable conduct. Throk eventually took sacred vows to the Oath of Devotion, though he has never been comfortable with grand speeches about virtue. He believes goodness is proven through labor, restraint, and the decision to stand between danger and someone who cannot withstand it. He now travels beyond his home to protect isolated communities, repay old kindnesses, and determine whether his oath can survive in a world where every faction claims to be righteous.
“The villagers remembered his strength, but more importantly, they remembered that he stayed after the danger passed.”
