Appearance
Zal is a lean, tawny-feathered aarakocra with a swept-back crown of dark bronze feathers and keen amber eyes. They wear a high-collared traveling coat over fine clothes, with a small brass astrolabe on a chain at their throat. Its lower rim is conspicuously rubbed smooth where their thumb worries it. Their voice is low and rounded, with careful, courtly vowels; when rattled, their breath catches in quick shallow sips and their speech turns abruptly clipped.
Mannerisms
Zal gives a slight, formal dip of the head before answering, even in casual conversation. They turn the astrolabe’s worn rim beneath one thumb while listening, and hold a breath for a beat before delivering a threat.
Personality
Measured, observant, and unfailingly courteous, Zal offers people exactly enough warmth to make them wonder whether they have earned more. They prefer to negotiate from a position of quiet advantage and remember every favor exchanged.
Ideals
Order. A stable hierarchy prevents needless suffering, and those capable of ruling have a duty to make others obey its laws.
Bonds
The astrolabe is both a family heirloom and a record of the routes their grandmother trusted. Zal will risk much to recover a set of lost flight charts that could restore their house’s control of the passes.
Flaws
Zal treats trust as a resource to be rationed and can mistake obedience for loyalty. When challenged in public, they would rather escalate a dispute than let anyone see them yield.
Quirks
Background
Zal hatched into a minor aarakocra house whose authority rested less on land than on its command of the high passes. Their family sent them to the distant city of Ilyrion to learn the customs of lowland courts, where Zal discovered that a persuasive word could turn a locked gate into a welcoming door. The brass astrolabe they carry belonged to their grandmother, and its worn rim still bears the tiny notches she made to mark safe passage through mountain storms. Their sorcery first surfaced during a formal negotiation. A candle flame stretched sideways toward Zal, then bloomed into a dragon-shaped tongue of fire when a rival mocked their family’s claim. Zal learned that the power was draconic, an inheritance they now cultivate with disciplined practice rather than awe. They left court with a polite farewell and a private list of debts, favors, and names. Zal intends to return not merely to reclaim their family’s influence, but to make sure no one can challenge it again.
