Appearance
Nifi is a small, wiry forest gnome, standing just over three feet tall, with copper-brown skin, bright hazel eyes, and moss-green hair braided with tiny brass bells. She wears patched charcoal traveling clothes cut down to fit her frame, with one carefully maintained crimson sash wrapped twice around her waist. The sash is frayed everywhere except at the knot, which is polished and rewoven so often that it looks newer than the rest of her clothing. A ring of old lock picks hangs beside her monk's sash, and her bare feet are wrapped in soft gray bindings marked with faint chalk lines from constant practice.
Mannerisms
Nifi pauses before entering any room to count exits, windows, and hanging objects. She taps her brass bell twice before making a difficult decision, rolls coins across her knuckles when thinking, and addresses locked doors as if they are shy animals. When embarrassed, she becomes extremely formal and calls everyone by their full name.
Personality
Nifi is bright, irreverent, and relentlessly observant. She treats strangers as potential friends, authority figures as potential puzzles, and every dangerous situation as an opportunity to learn something useful. Her humor is quick but rarely cruel, and she is far more comfortable risking herself than asking someone else to take a chance. Beneath her playful confidence is a serious determination to make sure no one is abandoned simply because they lack money, status, or a powerful protector.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be trapped by a cruel law, a locked door, or the accident of being born poor. If a rule protects power instead of people, breaking it is an act of mercy.
Bonds
She carries the monastery's small brass entry bell and will defend the monks who gave her a second chance. She also quietly sends part of every reward to the families living in the tenements where she was raised.
Flaws
Nifi cannot resist proving that a lock, puzzle, or guarded pocket is not as secure as its owner believes. She also has a habit of deciding that rules are suggestions whenever the person enforcing them is wealthy, smug, or cruel.
Quirks
Background
Nifi grew up beneath the market streets of a sprawling human city, where a loose circle of gnome burglars taught her that a small hand, a patient breath, and a well-timed grin could open almost any door. She learned to lift purses before she learned to read, then learned to read because ledgers revealed which merchants were cheating the desperate. Her criminal work gradually became selective. She stole medicine from hoarders, returned wages taken by corrupt foremen, and once emptied an aristocrat's vault solely to replace the food stores of an overcrowded tenement. The local thieves' guild appreciated her results less than it disliked her conscience. After a burglary went wrong, Nifi fled to a secluded monastery whose abbot caught her trying to steal the ceremonial key from his belt. Instead of turning her in, he challenged her to take it without disturbing a single hanging bell. She failed for three straight nights, then succeeded on the fourth by listening to the rhythm of the wind. The monks taught her to turn her quick hands into disciplined strikes, and she taught them how to recognize a dishonest tax collector. Now she travels as a wandering protector and occasional burglar, breaking locks only when the people behind them deserve freedom, and trying to discover whether a life built on mischief can still become a life of service.
