Appearance
Wei-Ea-Lung is a broad-shouldered human man with sun-browned skin, long black hair braided with red cord, and a neatly trimmed beard threaded with small brass rings. He wears layered indigo and charcoal robes beneath a sleeveless sailor's coat, with prayer beads wrapped around one wrist and a red sash holding his short sword. His hands are callused from rigging, rowing, and years of striking hardened training posts. He smells distinctly of saltwater, camphor oil, and clove smoke, a scent he considers the proper fragrance of a disciplined shipmaster. His grooming is meticulous, even after a week at sea, and he keeps his nails polished and his robes carefully mended.
Mannerisms
He bows slightly before every fight, as though greeting a respected opponent. He counts his breaths aloud when angry, taps two fingers against his wrist before making a decision, and refers to storms as teachers. When speaking to a nervous sailor, he quietly adjusts that person's knots or clothing instead of offering verbal reassurance.
Personality
Wei-Ea-Lung is patient, observant, and unfailingly polite until someone threatens his crew. He speaks softly in crowded rooms, forcing others to listen, and treats every conversation as an exchange of position and leverage. He enjoys strong tea, precise navigation, and arguments in which both sides are forced to admit one useful truth. Though he claims to be detached, he remembers the name of every sailor who has served under him.
Ideals
Balance. The sea does not hate the wicked or favor the just, but every vessel must answer to the consequences of its course. I will correct the balance where I can, without pretending the world can ever be made pure.
Bonds
The Dagger's Mercy and its crew are his chosen family. He will risk almost anything to recover the ship's stolen bell, which was forged from the monastery's temple bronze and taken by the admiral who destroyed his first crew.
Flaws
He is certain that hesitation is more dangerous than recklessness, especially when someone weaker is being exploited. He has a captain's habit of treating every disagreement as a test of command, and he quietly judges people who have never risked their lives for a crew. His calm can become coldness, and he sometimes lets an enemy escape simply because defeating them would be less instructive than allowing them to fear the next encounter.
Quirks
Background
Wei-Ea-Lung was born in Kolestorm, a storm-lashed harbor where ships from distant empires crowded beneath black cliffs. His parents were rope-makers, but the boy spent more time studying the movements of dockside fighters, deckhands, and temple guardians than learning the family trade. When a wandering monastery lost its supply vessel in a typhoon, Wei-Ea-Lung helped rescue three monks from the wreckage. In gratitude, they accepted him as a novice, teaching him that balance was not stillness, but the ability to remain centered while the world heaved beneath his feet. Years later, Wei-Ea-Lung returned to the sea as captain of the vessel Dagger's Mercy, a fast junk whose crew followed the Dagger Oath. The oath bound them to oppose tyrants who used trade, law, or naval power to starve the weak, though it never required them to pretend piracy was holy. Under his command, the Dagger's Mercy became a legend, raiding slavers, corrupt tax ships, and war profiteers while leaving honest merchants untouched. Wei-Ea-Lung now sails wherever exploitation gathers, collecting debts in coin when possible and in broken weapons when necessary. He claims to seek no kingdom, yet every port he frees remembers the captain who taught his crew to fight like a storm finding a mast.
