Appearance
Demon is a lean, long-limbed male tabaxi with charcoal-gray fur, silver bands around his tail, and bright amber eyes. He keeps his coat meticulously groomed, especially the fur around his face and ears, giving him an almost vain appearance despite his criminal trade. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice his teeth. His upper canines are unusually prominent, and when he smiles or eats, he reveals a wide, predatory grin that makes even friendly expressions seem like warnings. He dresses in fitted dark leather, soft boots, and a sleeveless hooded coat lined with hidden pockets. His claws are carefully trimmed for climbing, but his fingertips remain nimble enough for delicate locks and lifted purses.
Mannerisms
Demon tilts his head and flicks one ear toward anyone speaking, as though weighing the sound rather than the words. He casually touches nearby locks, hinges, and pockets while thinking. When amused, he shows all of his teeth in a slow, unsettling grin, then acts surprised when people step away.
Personality
Demon is observant, quick-witted, and irreverently curious. He enjoys puzzles, dangerous bargains, and people who underestimate him. He rarely lies when a technically true statement will cause more confusion, and he prefers to solve problems with preparation, misdirection, and a well-timed escape rather than direct confrontation. Beneath his cynical independence, he is fascinated by loyalty and quietly studies anyone who offers it.
Ideals
Freedom. No guild, law, noble, prophecy, or god has the right to own another person's choices. If a rule exists, it is an invitation to discover who benefits from it.
Bonds
He protects the retired burglar who first taught him, even though he pretends the old thief is merely an inconvenient liability. He also carries a single page from the stolen ledger and intends to expose the people named on it when the moment is right.
Flaws
Demon treats trust as a temporary lapse in judgment. He cannot resist proving that he is the cleverest person in the room, even when silence would be safer. He also has a habit of stealing small, meaningless objects from people he dislikes, then forgetting where he put them.
Quirks
Background
Demon grew up in the crowded backstreets of a river city, where every alley had its own rules and every locked door represented an opportunity. His first teacher was not a guildmaster or a kindly mentor, but a retired burglar who recognized that Demon could hear the difference between a spring-loaded lock and a warded one. Under that tutelage, he learned to move quietly, read people quickly, and leave a room looking untouched. He also learned that information was more valuable than coin, and that the best thieves were the ones nobody remembered clearly afterward. His career ended with a job that was supposed to be simple. Demon was hired to steal a ledger from a merchant's private office, but the book contained names of officials, smugglers, and a criminal syndicate's hidden accounts. Rather than sell it, he copied several pages and used the information to ruin the syndicate's local operation. Now both the syndicate and the authorities want the original ledger, which Demon keeps hidden somewhere only he can reach. He travels under the name Demon because it makes people expect cruelty, and expectations are among the easiest locks to pick.
