Appearance
Taki Kettik is a stout halfling with weather-browned skin, a broad nose, bright hazel eyes, and thick black hair tied into two short braids with bits of colored thread. He wears practical scale mail over a saffron traveling coat, with a wooden holy symbol tucked beneath his collar. His shield is painted with a winding trail, a rising sun, and an aggressively cheerful green beetle. Numerous food pouches hang from his belt, and the smell of toasted grain, dried fruit, and pepper follows him everywhere.
Mannerisms
Taki counts provisions under his breath whenever he is nervous, taps his holy symbol three times before entering danger, and points with his chin when both hands are occupied. He gives every campsite a name and insists that the first person awake must greet the morning aloud.
Personality
Endlessly optimistic, Taki assumes every frightening journey contains a lesson, a shortcut, or at minimum a place suitable for lunch. He is warm, practical, and fiercely attentive to the needs of others. He asks enemies whether they have considered making better choices, but once they threaten his companions, his cheerful tone becomes calm and immovable.
Ideals
The road belongs to everyone. Every traveler, beast, and stranger deserves a fair chance to reach a safer place, and no meal should be eaten alone if another person is hungry.
Bonds
The old shrine where Taki began his calling must be restored, and he carries one cracked tile from it as a reminder. He also feels personally responsible for anyone who shares a road, campfire, or meal with him.
Flaws
Taki refuses to abandon a companion, even when retreat is clearly the wiser choice. He also treats hunger as an emergency of nearly cosmic importance and becomes irrationally suspicious of anyone who declines a second breakfast.
Quirks
Background
Taki Kettik was raised among a stout halfling caravan that moved between remote villages, shrine roads, and market towns. His family carried grain, tools, letters, and pilgrims, and Taki learned early that every journey became easier when someone remembered to pack extra food. During a winter crossing, the caravan found a small roadside shrine buried beneath snow. Taki shared the last of his honey cakes with the starving priest who tended it, then helped dig the shrine free. By morning, the priest had taught him that a pilgrimage was not measured by distance, but by the people one kept safe along the way. Taki eventually devoted himself to a nature-minded deity of roads, hearths, and living things. He sees every expedition as a sacred route, even when the route leads through monster-haunted ruins or directly toward something with too many teeth. His first real miracle came when he spoke gently to a frightened pack mule and somehow understood its warning about raiders in the ravine. Since then, he has traveled with an ever-growing collection of companions, provisions, and extremely specific opinions about the correct way to wrap travel bread. Taki is optimistic because he regards setbacks as badly marked milestones, not failures.
