Appearance
Cement is a broad-shelled female tortle with charcoal-gray scales, a heavy ochre shell marked by pale mineral-like streaks, and alert black eyes that constantly track exits, hands, and valuables. She wears practical scale mail over a dark travel shirt, keeps a longbow within easy reach, and carries thieves' tools in a wrapped leather roll beneath her cloak. Before speaking, she makes a slow, dry clicking sound in the back of her throat, as though testing the shape of the next lie. Her voice is low, patient, and unexpectedly pleasant.
Mannerisms
Cement pauses for several heartbeats before answering questions, makes a faint throat-click before telling a lie, and angles her shell toward anyone standing behind her. She rarely looks at faces during negotiations, preferring to watch belts, hands, doorways, and windows.
Personality
Cement is soft-spoken, observant, and unnervingly courteous. She treats every conversation like a trail to be followed, noting who interrupts, who watches the exits, and who lies badly. She dislikes pointless cruelty because it creates noise, but she has no moral objection to calculated cruelty that produces leverage. She is most relaxed outdoors, where tracks cannot pretend to be anything other than tracks.
Ideals
Freedom. No creature has the right to command another. If someone wants obedience, they should be prepared to pay for it.
Bonds
Cement still possesses the crew's original route ledger, and she intends to hunt down every former partner who betrayed her. She is also fiercely protective of the one young tortle apprentice who once shared food with her when the crew left her behind.
Flaws
Cement assumes every kindness is a trap and every promise has a price. She cannot leave a betrayal unanswered, even when revenge is foolish or strategically disastrous. When cornered, she becomes coldly practical and may sacrifice an ally without warning if doing so guarantees her own survival.
Quirks
Background
Cement was raised along a floodplain where tortle families traded river pearls, smoked fish, and salvaged relics from the drowned roads. She learned the patience of a hunter there, waiting motionless in reeds until a marsh bird or careless traveler wandered close. She also learned that the people who controlled the river crossings could take whatever they wanted. Cement decided early that laws were simply nets cast by stronger creatures, and that the clever should be the ones holding the rope. As a young adult, she joined a traveling burglary crew, serving as their wilderness guide and ambush specialist. Her shell made her difficult to move once she planted herself, and her calm voice made frightened marks feel safe long enough to reveal where they kept their valuables. A robbery went wrong when the crew abandoned her to protect their escape, leaving Cement with a permanent hatred of loyalty that is not profitable. She survived, tracked the fugitives across three provinces, and reclaimed their stolen maps, contacts, and coin. Now she works as a ranger when the pay is good, using trails, beasts, and patience to find prey far from the reach of city law.
