Appearance
Alfrun is a lean, medium-height human man with a composed, scholarly bearing. His dark brown hair is parted with exacting care, and his short beard is trimmed to a precise square. His blue-gray eyes are attentive rather than severe. He wears a well-maintained chain shirt beneath layered ivory and blue vestments, carries a polished wooden shield marked with a silver sunburst, and keeps his holy symbol suspended from a cord of braided red thread. Before speaking, he takes a quiet breath through his nose and briefly presses his lips together, as if arranging the next sentence in his mind.
Mannerisms
He pauses for one measured breath before important statements, smooths the edge of his sleeve when thinking, and addresses frightened people in the same steady tone he uses during formal liturgy. When reading a document, he silently counts the lines with the tip of one finger.
Personality
Patient, precise, and quietly warm. Alfrun listens as if every confession were a sacred text, but he has little patience for theatrics, deliberate cruelty, or people who mistake confidence for competence. He prefers practical kindness, clear agreements, and a well-organized plan.
Ideals
Mercy must have structure. Compassion without discipline can fail the helpless, but law without compassion is only cruelty wearing a uniform.
Bonds
The riverside temple that raised him is his true home. He sends a portion of every reward back to its kitchens and will risk almost anything to protect its people, archives, and sacred relics.
Flaws
Alfrun confuses calmness with correctness. When frightened or uncertain, he becomes even more formal and starts issuing instructions, which can make allies feel managed rather than supported. He is also slow to forgive breaches of trust, especially when someone uses religious language to excuse cruelty.
Quirks
Background
Alfrun was raised in a river-city temple where the dead were remembered by name and the living were never turned away hungry. As a boy, he learned to copy prayers, inventory grain, and settle disputes between parishioners who believed their grievances were matters of divine importance. His gift for quiet observation made him a trusted acolyte, while his stubborn sense of order made him invaluable during floods, famines, and political unrest. He came to understand that faith was not proved by thunder from the heavens, but by the choice to remain useful when everyone else had begun to despair. His calling as a cleric began during the winter of the Black Thaw, when a fever swept through the lower wards. Alfrun spent thirteen nights carrying water, tending the sick, and reciting names over the dying. On the fourteenth morning, his prayers answered with a warmth that passed through his hands into a child's failing chest. Since then, he has traveled as a healer, investigator, and guardian of sacred places, seeking the source of a corruption that causes communities to turn against their own neighbors. He believes law is meant to protect the vulnerable, not merely to preserve the comfort of the powerful, and he will challenge any authority that forgets the distinction.
