Appearance
Kambzuru is a broad-shouldered black dragonborn with charcoal scales that fade to dull gray around his jaw and throat. His eyes are a deep amber, steady and difficult to read. He wears well-maintained leather armor beneath a soot-colored traveling coat, with a rapier at his hip and two daggers hidden in plain sight among his belt tools. A heavy iron key ring is always fastened to his left wrist, its largest key worn smooth where his thumb constantly rubs it. His teeth are blunt and uneven from years of cracking dried meat and nutshells with his molars, and he bares them in a quiet, unsettling grin when he has finally decided to act.
Mannerisms
He pauses before answering simple questions, as though checking whether the truth is worth the effort. When listening, he lightly rubs the largest iron key on his wrist. During tense conversations, he angles his body toward the nearest exit without appearing to look at it.
Personality
Kambzuru is reserved, observant, and transactional. He speaks in short sentences, rarely volunteers personal information, and remembers exactly what people have promised him. He dislikes needless cruelty, but he has no romantic beliefs about mercy. To him, violence is a tool, and a tool is judged by whether it accomplishes its purpose without creating a larger problem.
Ideals
Necessity. Morality is a luxury people discuss after they have eaten, slept, and secured their own safety. If something is needed badly enough, the person willing to take it is the person who deserves it.
Bonds
He carries a worn iron key that belonged to a dead criminal contact. He will betray almost anyone before allowing the key or the secret behind it to fall into the hands of the people responsible for that death.
Flaws
He treats trust as a temporary weakness and assumes that anyone who knows what he wants can eventually use it against him. When cornered, he escalates too quickly, choosing a permanent solution because it feels safer than leaving an enemy angry and alive.
Quirks
Background
Kambzuru was raised in a riverside dragonborn quarter where debts were recorded more carefully than births. His family repaired locks, hinges, and iron fittings for merchants who preferred not to ask where certain keys had come from. He learned early that privacy was not the same as innocence, and that a person could be respectable in public while keeping a dozen profitable secrets beneath the floorboards. Kambzuru became useful by noticing which doors were opened after midnight and which customers kept glancing toward the exits. His criminal career began with small jobs, carrying messages, recovering stolen goods, and quietly persuading people who had forgotten what they owed. He discovered that violence was often less dangerous than threats, provided it was precise and final enough to prevent a second conversation. A failed job left one of his closest contacts dead and Kambzuru holding the key to a locked strongbox he could not open. He still carries that key, worn smooth by his thumb, while searching for the lock it belongs to. He now travels as a freelance rogue, keeping his own counsel and taking work that provides leverage, shelter, or answers. He is not cruel for pleasure, but once he decides something is necessary, he does not let another person's fear outweigh his need.
