Appearance
A broad-shouldered Calishite human with sun-darkened skin, a close-cropped beard, and thick black hair tied at the nape. Old claw marks cross his left shoulder, while a pale scar circles his right forearm from a wrestling match with a desert lion. He wears weathered scale mail beneath a sand-colored cloak, carries a longbow across his back, and keeps two worn shortswords at his hips. His amber-brown eyes are steady and watchful, with the unsettling stillness of a predator waiting for movement.
Mannerisms
He studies people the way he studies tracks, noticing weight distribution, breathing, scars, and where their eyes settle. Before a difficult decision, he presses two fingers to the old scar around his forearm. When excited by a dangerous creature, he smiles without showing his teeth.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and intensely patient, Mauqari speaks in short practical sentences and dislikes boasting. He respects courage, preparation, and creatures that refuse to flee. He is more comfortable beside a campfire with an animal than in a crowded tavern, but he is dependable when others need protection. His calm becomes unnerving when he recognizes a worthy challenge.
Ideals
Order. The desert is merciless, but it is not chaotic. Every creature has a place, every hunt has a purpose, and strength must be governed by law or it becomes savagery.
Bonds
The farming village that named him a hero is under his protection, and he will return whenever its people call. He also keeps the broken iron collar once worn by the desert lion he defeated, as a reminder that victory over a beast is not the same as mastery over oneself.
Flaws
He is addicted to danger and grows irritable when a hunt becomes predictable. He deliberately closes to wrestling range against creatures that should be fought from a distance. When his instincts take over, he can be frighteningly cold, and he privately worries that his rule against hunting humanoids is the last barrier separating him from the monsters he admires.
Quirks
Background
Mauqari Amaru grew up on the hard edge of Calimshan, where the desert met scattered farms and caravan roads. His family survived by hunting gazelle, ibex, and the great cats that followed them into the dry country. Mauqari learned early that a hunter who relied only on a bow was already half defeated. He studied tracks, wind, and animal behavior, then began closing with his quarry, locking arms with beasts long enough to feel their strength and fear. His most celebrated deed came when a monstrous desert lion descended on a village at dusk. Rather than kill it from safety, Mauqari drew it away from the homes and wrestled it into the dust until the villagers could escape. The people hailed him as a hero, and the tale spread along the caravan routes. Years of successful hunts have left him restless. Gazelle no longer challenge him, and even the largest ordinary predators have begun to feel like familiar arguments. He now seeks dangerous beasts, not for trophies, wealth, or cruelty, but for the test they provide. With every encounter, he notices himself becoming more like the creatures he studies. He crouches before entering a room, bares his teeth when angered, and sometimes understands an animal's intent before it moves. Mauqari follows a strict law of his own: beasts may be hunted, but humanoids are never quarry. He believes civilization survives because people choose rules over instinct, and he fears that one day he may no longer be able to tell the difference.
