Appearance
Zalumai is a lean, long-limbed tabaxi with tawny-gold fur patterned by dark russet rosettes. Her green eyes are bright and watchful, and a narrow scar cuts through one eyebrow. She wears worn travel leathers, a red woven sash from her home village, and a necklace strung with small brass bells that she removes before battle. Her movements are graceful even when she is carrying a greataxe nearly as tall as she is.
Mannerisms
Zalumai tilts her head sharply when listening, as if following a distant sound. She stretches her shoulders before difficult conversations, drums her claws against wooden tables, and becomes completely still just before a fight begins.
Personality
Zalumai is warm, curious, and impossible to keep in one place for long. She collects local sayings, smells unfamiliar foods before eating them, and asks blunt questions that more cautious people would avoid. Beneath her playful restlessness is a deep sensitivity to fear and humiliation. She notices who is being ignored in a room and usually moves to stand beside them.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be forced to kneel simply because another person owns a title, a uniform, or a larger weapon.
Bonds
The farming village that took her in is her true family. She will risk almost anything to protect its people, its smithy, and the red sash they gave her when she left.
Flaws
Once Zalumai decides that someone is a bully, she stops listening to anything they say. She also has a dangerous habit of treating exhaustion, injury, and hunger as inconveniences that can be solved by moving faster.
Quirks
Background
Zalumai was born among a traveling tabaxi family that settled for several seasons in a farming village after a flood destroyed the old roadways. She became a familiar sight in the fields, racing children between irrigation ditches, carrying messages between scattered homesteads, and helping the village smith despite having little patience for careful work. Her quick hands and restless curiosity made her a natural scout, but it was her fierce loyalty that made the villagers claim her as one of their own. When a brutal tax collector and his hired guards began taking seed grain, tools, and winter stores, Zalumai tried negotiation first. It failed. During the final confrontation, she seized a smith's unfinished greataxe and broke the collector's wagon, then stood between the guards and the villagers until they fled. The village survived the winter because of the supplies she recovered, and the people began calling her their wandering champion. Zalumai left soon afterward, partly to keep danger away from her adopted home and partly because the sound of distant roads had begun calling to her again. She now travels as a folk hero, seeking tyrants, lost stories, and any place where ordinary people need someone angry enough to stand beside them.
