Appearance

Kael Ironhand is a 6'2", 220-pound human man with dark-toned skin, broad shoulders, and the dense, powerful build of a career soldier. His long polumalu hair falls heavily around his face and shoulders, usually tied back with a strip of worn leather. A scruffy beard frames a weathered face marked by old scars, tired eyes, and a permanent expression of grim concentration. He carries himself like a veteran who expects danger even in peaceful rooms.

Mannerisms

Kael stands with his back to walls and automatically studies exits whenever he enters a room. He rolls his shoulders before a fight, tightens his grip on his weapon when angry, and speaks in a low, measured voice even when surrounded by chaos. He rarely sits with both hands empty.

Personality

Kael is stern, observant, and quietly compassionate. He distrusts grand speeches but believes deeply in practical acts of courage. He is slow to offer friendship, yet once someone earns his loyalty, he becomes fiercely protective. Around children, animals, and frightened civilians, the hard edges of his soldierly demeanor soften noticeably.

Ideals

Protection. Strength is not a privilege to be enjoyed, it is a responsibility to be placed between the innocent and whatever threatens them.

Bonds

He carries the names of his fallen comrades and the rescued villagers in his memory, and he will risk everything to protect the people of the village he saved.

Flaws

Kael has difficulty forgiving cowardice, especially when it comes from people in positions of authority. He is quick to assume betrayal and sometimes treats honest mistakes as deliberate failures. When guilt overwhelms him, he becomes reckless, believing that pain is the only punishment he has truly earned.

Quirks

Keeps a private list of the dead and adds names after every battle.
Taps two fingers against his shield before entering dangerous places.
Always gives the first portion of a meal to the hungriest person nearby.
Can identify several military marching songs from only a few notes.

Background

Kael Ironhand was raised among frontier settlements where every able body learned to stand watch before learning to rest. His strength made him a natural fit for the levy, but discipline turned that strength into something sharper. He joined the army young, served in border campaigns, and earned the name Ironhand after holding a breached gate long enough for wounded soldiers and civilians to escape. The title was not a compliment at first. His commanders thought him stubborn, humorless, and too willing to take punishment meant for others. In time, they learned that Kael would not abandon anyone under his protection. His final campaign ended in betrayal. A commanding officer ordered Kael's unit to abandon a remote village during an enemy advance, claiming the civilians were an unacceptable burden. Kael disobeyed, rallied the remaining soldiers, and fought through the night to evacuate the villagers. The village survived, but the officer blamed Kael for the losses and stripped him of his formal command. Kael left the army with his insignia, his battered weapons, and the names of the dead carved into the inside of his shield. Now he travels as a soldier without a banner, protecting those who cannot defend themselves and searching for proof that the officer who betrayed his unit still sells lives for political favor.
