Appearance
Moriko is a broad-shouldered male tiefling with dark red skin, swept-back black horns, a long tail, and ember-gold eyes that rarely seem to blink. His body is heavily scarred from five years in the Thayan death pits, with old whip marks across his back and a jagged brand near his collarbone. He keeps his left hand inside the broken half of an iron manacle, the metal worn smooth where his fingers constantly worry it. He wears battered chain mail over dark travel clothes and carries himself like a fighter who expects every room to become a battlefield.
Mannerisms
Moriko constantly rubs the broken manacle with the fingers of his left hand. He stands with his back to walls, tracks every exit, and silently counts nearby opponents before speaking. When angered, he rolls his shoulders and bares one canine tooth before drawing his weapon.
Personality
Moriko is laconic, suspicious, and fiercely independent. He dislikes grand speeches and military ceremony, preferring blunt statements and immediate action. He has a sharp, dry sense of humor that surfaces at the worst possible moments. Beneath his hostility is a disciplined survivor who notices hunger, fear, and captivity in others almost immediately.
Ideals
Freedom. No person is property, and no authority deserves obedience merely because it carries a weapon or wears a uniform. Moriko chooses his own chains, which means he chooses none.
Bonds
The broken manacle on his left hand is a reminder of every person who treated him as property. Moriko will risk his life to destroy slave markets, free captives, and ruin the people who profit from chains.
Flaws
Moriko assumes every offer has a hidden chain attached. He is quick to threaten, slow to trust, and sometimes refuses help even when accepting it would be wiser. When cornered, he can become cruel, taking out old hatred on people who merely remind him of his captors.
Quirks
Background
Moriko remembers little of his life before the Thayan death pits. He was sold young, trained to kill for the amusement of others, and forced to survive five years in a squalid arena where pain was entertainment and mercy was weakness. The pits taught him the fundamentals of a soldier through repetition, fear, and blood. He learned how to read an opponent's stance, how to keep fighting while injured, and how to turn scraps of metal into weapons. His infernal heritage made him a spectacle as much as a combatant, and the overseers delighted in placing him against enemies who expected a horned slave to be easy prey. One night, a door was left unlocked. Moriko did not pray, hesitate, or look back. He fought his way through guards and handlers with nothing but the broken half of the manacles that had bound him. He still wears that iron restraint on his left hand as a symbol of hatred, not shame. Years later, a merchant caravan nearly delivered him back into slavery when Zhentarim guards recognized his value and attempted to recapture him. Moriko escaped again, leaving several guards broken in the dust. Now he sells his skill as a fighter on his own terms. He has no interest in noble causes or military banners, but he will gladly turn his blade against slavers, pit masters, and anyone who mistakes freedom for something they can own.
“The pits taught him the fundamentals of a soldier through repetition, fear, and blood.”
