Appearance
A compact, broad-shouldered lightfoot halfling with warm brown skin, round cheeks, and dark auburn hair usually tied beneath a soft traveling cap. Her gray-green eyes are quick and observant, and a small crescent scar marks the edge of her left eyebrow. She dresses in well-maintained leather armor beneath layered earth-toned clothes, with a dozen useful pockets hidden throughout. Her hands are nimble, callused, and almost always occupied with a coin, card, button, or lockpick.
Mannerisms
Miri speaks softly and keeps her voice pleasant even while delivering a threat. She tilts her head when evaluating a person, drums two fingers against her thumb while thinking, and smiles a little whenever someone says something she already knows is false.
Personality
Gentle, attentive, and almost unnervingly patient, Miri treats conversation like a game of cards. She prefers to win without anyone realizing a game was being played. She is protective of ordinary travelers, shopkeepers, and servants, but has little sympathy for people who use wealth or authority to make others feel small.
Ideals
Balance. Everyone is entitled to a fair chance, and no law, oath, or social rank should give one person the right to take everything from another.
Bonds
Miri's oldest false identity belonged to a missing caravan courier who once saved her family from a bandit ambush. She still uses the courier's name when necessary, but she quietly investigates every rumor that might lead to the courier's fate. She also sends a portion of her earnings home, insisting that every dangerous job is simply another kind of delivery.
Flaws
Miri cannot resist improving a lie once it has begun. She adds unnecessary details, embellishes harmless facts, and sometimes talks herself into a more complicated scheme than the situation requires. She also assumes that anyone who appears completely honest is either exceptionally dangerous or exceptionally foolish.
Quirks
Background
Miri Nambeko grew up in a close-knit halfling caravan that carried spices, dyed cloth, small tools, and stories between river towns. She learned early that a halfling could be overlooked without being helpless. While other children practiced songs and card games, Miri studied the pauses before a merchant answered, the way a guard rested a hand near a weapon, and which smiles meant welcome rather than suspicion. Her nimble fingers first earned praise repairing buckles and slipping knots, then earned coin when she began making small substitutions in ledgers and travel papers for people who could not afford the official fees.
