Appearance
A lean, weather-beaten human man of medium height, with sun-browned skin, sharp gray eyes, and dark hair cut close at the sides. A thin scar runs from his left eyebrow to his cheek. He wears battered scale mail beneath a green-gray cloak, with a longbow over one shoulder and two shortswords at his hips. His equipment is carefully maintained, but his clothing is patched and plainly chosen for movement rather than appearance.
Mannerisms
Kellan checks every doorway, window, and rooftop before sitting down. He rolls his shoulders as if loosening armor that is not there, taps two fingers against his bow whenever he is thinking, and automatically counts exits in any room.
Personality
Kellan is alert, sardonic, and fiercely self-reliant. He speaks plainly, dislikes grand speeches, and has a dry sense of humor that appears at the worst possible moments. Beneath his distrust of institutions, he is patient with frightened people and unexpectedly gentle with animals. He prefers practical solutions, clean escape routes, and companions who do not confuse obedience with loyalty.
Ideals
Freedom. No banner, commander, or cause has the right to own a person's life. People should choose their risks for themselves, even when their choices are foolish.
Bonds
Kellan still carries the cracked brass insignia of the patrol that was destroyed during a retreat his commanding officer ordered too late. He believes several survivors were taken alive, and he intends to find them, even if doing so means betraying old commanders or abandoning profitable work. He also keeps an unspoken promise to protect frightened recruits from becoming expendable names on someone else's report.
Flaws
He assumes every organization is eventually going to use and betray him, so he undermines authority before it can undermine him. Kellan can be needlessly reckless when someone invokes military honor, especially if he suspects that a superior is sacrificing common soldiers for convenience.
Quirks
Background
Kellan Vey was born in a frontier garrison where the sound of weapons being sharpened was as familiar as morning bells. He enlisted young, more from hunger and restlessness than patriotism, and quickly learned that armies were built from ordinary people who were expected to perform extraordinary acts on command. He became a scout, moving ahead of marching columns through forests, ravines, and abandoned villages. Kellan was good at finding tracks, reading weather, and noticing the one bird that stopped singing when an ambush was near.
“He became a scout, moving ahead of marching columns through forests, ravines, and abandoned villages.”
