Appearance
Sheshan is a compact male halfling with warm olive-brown skin, dark hazel eyes, and thick black hair worn in a short, uneven braid behind one ear. A thin scar crosses his left eyebrow, and faint gray discoloration traces the veins along his right hand, a visible mark of the shade bound within him. He wears practical scale mail beneath a dark green military coat, carries a round shield painted with a faded silver crescent, and keeps his martial weapon close at hand.
Mannerisms
He pauses before entering any room, listening for a second heartbeat. When irritated, he rubs the gray-marked veins in his right hand and answers questions with unusually formal military phrasing.
Personality
Sheshan is dryly observant, irreverent toward authority, and fiercely protective once someone has earned his trust. He prefers practical solutions and quiet exits, but he has a mischievous streak that emerges around pompous officers, wealthy nobles, and anyone who assumes a halfling is harmless.
Ideals
Freedom. No commander, spirit, god, or tradition owns the right to decide what lives inside another person.
Bonds
He carries the cracked silver insignia of the patrol that defended him when his possession was discovered. He will risk almost anything to repay the surviving members of that unit and to protect soldiers abandoned by their commanders.
Flaws
He is quick to interpret kindness as manipulation, and when frightened he becomes reckless rather than vulnerable. He also secretly fears that the shade is learning from every person he protects.
Quirks
Background
Sheshan was born among the hill-country halfling communities that traded between isolated valleys and larger human settlements. He learned early that being small was not the same as being helpless. His mother taught him to read moods, weather, and footsteps, while his older brothers taught him the practical work of a soldier, how to keep formation, how to shield a wounded companion, and how to run without making a sound. During a border campaign, Sheshan survived an encounter with a dying battlefield spirit that tried to inhabit him. The possession did not take completely. Instead, something remained, a cold intelligence that sometimes moves with his shadow and answers his fear with unnatural strength. His commanders wanted him executed, but his unit had seen the shade turn aside a killing blow. Sheshan was spared and quietly assigned to dangerous scouting and rear-guard duties. He now travels as a discharged soldier, determined to master the presence inside him before it masters him. He protects others partly from honor, partly from guilt, and partly because every life saved proves that the shade is still his weapon, not his master.
