Appearance

Kixik is a small kobold with shiny, semi-translucent purple scales that catch the light like polished amethyst and faintly resemble a dragon's hide. She keeps nearly all of herself covered in layered travel clothes, gloves, a hooded cloak, and a high collar, partly for modesty and partly to avoid comparisons to the dragon she defied. Outdoors, she wears enormous dark sunglasses. Indoors or underground, she replaces them with thick, round spectacles. A large iron cooking pot is strapped to her back, secured with leather harnesses and padded against her scales. The pot bears a brightly painted image of a many-eyed dragon, a crooked tower, and a blazing star, which Kixik insists is a prophecy. When waiting, she balances on the balls of her feet and leans forward as if prepared to flee or deliver a lecture. Her eyes constantly scan ceilings, exits, written signs, and unattended objects before she looks at anyone's face.

Mannerisms

Kixik taps the rim of her pot whenever she is thinking, adjusts her sunglasses even when they are already perfectly straight, and whispers possible answers to riddles before speaking aloud. When nervous, she turns her body sideways, keeping one foot aimed toward the nearest exit. She addresses books as if they are unreliable colleagues.

Personality

Kixik is intensely curious, theatrically confident, and much braver when she has had time to prepare a theory. She treats every puzzle as a conversation with the universe and every ancient text as a suspicious witness. She is friendly toward outsiders who respect her questions, but she becomes sharply argumentative when someone dismisses her because she is small or a kobold.

Ideals

Knowledge should belong to everyone, especially those whom powerful creatures expect to remain ignorant. No dragon, scholar, or tyrant gets to decide who is allowed to ask questions.

Bonds

The painted pot, the dead wizard's notes, and the prophecy they seem to share are the closest things Kixik has to a family. She will risk herself to recover lost books, protect curious outsiders, and prove that her old clan was wrong to cast her out.

Flaws

Kixik cannot resist correcting an incorrect statement, even when silence would be safer. She is suspicious of generosity, terrified of being trapped underground without an exit, and so convinced that her painting is a genuine prophecy that she sometimes interprets ordinary accidents as cosmic warnings.

Quirks

She calls her painted pot Professor Pot and occasionally asks it for advice.
She labels every important object with handwritten paper tags.
She counts doors, windows, ladders, and ceiling supports whenever she enters a room.
She believes dragons are physically incapable of admitting they are confused.
She keeps a tiny emergency spoon tucked into one sleeve.

Background

Kixik was raised beneath the shadow of a dragon whose lair dominated her kobold clan's tunnels. The dragon demanded tribute, obedience, and constant praise, and the clan gave all three until Kixik noticed that the dragon's proclamations contradicted one another. One day, carrying the cooking pot she used to collect scraps and supplies, she stood before the dragon and publicly pointed out the contradiction. The dragon was amused rather than angry. It offered Kixik a trial of wits, promising to let her live if she could answer three riddles and identify the one statement the dragon itself believed to be false. Kixik won by refusing to answer the questions directly. Instead, she made the dragon explain its assumptions until the dragon contradicted its own prophecy. She was allowed to leave, but the clan branded her reckless and drove her out before the dragon could change its mind. While wandering through a lightless ruin, Kixik found the notes of an unfortunate wizard who had apparently met a very bad end. The notes were incomplete, paranoid, and filled with diagrams that looked remarkably similar to the painting on Kixik's pot. She took the notes, taught herself enough magic to survive, and now travels in search of the prophecy's meaning. She believes the painting predicts a coming confrontation between a dragon, a tower, and a star, with herself somehow standing in the middle of it.
