Appearance
A three-foot-four gnome with sun-browned bronze skin, broad green-gray eyes, and thick russet hair braided close to his scalp to keep dust and wind from tangling it. His beard is short, uneven, and threaded with pale copper, usually powdered with the fine ochre grit of the Mulhorandi steppes. He dresses in layered travel robes beneath a weathered archaeological coat, with a quarterstaff, satchel, and crystal arcane focus always close at hand. His voice is normally warm and precise, but when frightened it catches on certain ancient syllables, as though another voice is trying to speak through him. Fine black motes sometimes gather beneath his fingernails after he casts a spell.
Mannerisms
He rubs the pads of his thumbs together while translating, silently traces the geometry of doorways with his staff, and becomes excessively formal when angry. When his magic stirs, he pauses mid-sentence and listens toward the nearest wall.
Personality
Tavian is patient, courteous, and intensely observant. He treats servants, soldiers, scholars, and spirits as potential teachers, though he asks questions with such relentless precision that casual conversation can feel like an examination. He has a dry, understated humor and a genuine tenderness toward people who have been overlooked or misremembered. He is brave in the methodical way of someone who has already measured the danger and decided that leaving others to face it alone would be worse.
Ideals
Knowledge should preserve the dignity of the forgotten. The past belongs to everyone, not merely to kings, collectors, or those powerful enough to bury the truth.
Bonds
The expedition journal of his vanished mentor contains the only complete record of the buried sanctuary. Tavian will risk almost anything to recover it and learn whether his mentor was killed, transformed, or recruited by whatever waits below.
Flaws
He cannot leave a mystery alone, even when every sensible instinct tells him that the mystery is dangerous. He also hides the severity of his visions because he fears that scholars will treat him as contaminated evidence or, worse, attempt to awaken the presence within him.
Quirks
Background
Tavian Ghoradze spent decades as an archaeologist among the tombs and half-buried temple roads of the Mulhorandi steppes. His gnomish patience made him unusually good at the work. He could spend a week cataloging a single funerary seal, then notice that its maker had reversed one line of script to conceal a second inscription. His reputation grew among scholars, though tavern keepers knew him better as the little historian who slept beneath tables covered in rubbings and maps. He believed every tomb deserved careful study and every dead culture deserved to be remembered without being reduced to treasure. During an excavation beneath a collapsed sanctuary, Tavian found a sealed chamber that did not appear in any surviving plan. Its walls were older than the surrounding ruins, carved with figures whose faces had been deliberately scraped away. At the chamber's center stood a black stone vessel, warm despite the cold earth around it. When Tavian touched the inscription, the seal opened without breaking. Something vast stirred beyond the stone, and a pressure like a hand closed around his heart. He escaped when a burst of unnatural fire tore through the chamber, but the event awakened power that had been dormant within him. Now spells rise from his hands in fits of heat, frost, and impossible whispers, while the thing beneath the sanctuary remains sealed, waiting for him to return.
“His gnomish patience made him unusually good at the work.”
