Appearance
Granite is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf with ash-gray skin, copper-brown eyes, and thick black hair braided with tiny brass gears. Their beard is cropped close along the jaw and decorated with mineral beads, while a soot-darkened leather apron is usually worn over scale mail. Their fingers are stained with oil, charcoal, and metal filings, and a brass monocle rests over one eye when they are working.
Mannerisms
Granite taps metal objects three times before using them, mutters measurements under their breath, and tilts their head sharply whenever someone makes an imprecise claim. When excited, they speak faster and begin sketching diagrams on any available surface.
Personality
Granite is intensely curious, practical, and cheerfully irreverent. They approach conversation like troubleshooting, asking blunt questions and offering unsolicited solutions. Despite their rough manners, they are dependable in a crisis and genuinely fascinated by the talents of others.
Ideals
Innovation. Tradition is valuable, but a design that cannot survive improvement is already halfway broken.
Bonds
Granite owes their guild a debt of honor and will risk almost anything to protect its name. They also carry a cracked brass gear from the failed lifting rig, determined to someday discover exactly why it developed a personality.
Flaws
Granite cannot resist improving other people's belongings without permission, especially when they insist that something is already working perfectly. They are also prone to treating serious danger as an exciting engineering challenge.
Quirks
Background
Granite Cobbleskin was raised among the ringing anvils and dust-choked galleries of a dwarven stoneworkers' guild. Their family built bridges, gates, and siege defenses, but Granite was never satisfied with merely shaping stone. They wanted to understand why mechanisms worked, why certain alloys held an edge, and whether magic could be persuaded to behave like a particularly clever machine. After years of apprenticing as a mason and tinkerer, Granite began embedding tiny arcane circuits into tools, locks, and load-bearing supports. Their inventions were useful, but unpredictable, and one experimental lifting rig briefly animated an entire guildhall full of furniture. The guild forgave the damage, though not the embarrassment. Granite was encouraged to travel, gather rare materials, and develop their craft somewhere that did not contain irreplaceable ancestral statues. They now adventure as a field engineer, repairing equipment, testing dangerous prototypes, and selling practical marvels to anyone who can afford them. Granite is fiercely proud of their guild, but their chaotic curiosity frequently clashes with tradition. They believe every problem has a solution, provided one is willing to dismantle the problem first.
