Appearance
Bokk is a lean, wiry hobgoblin of average height, built for speed and endurance. His pale, sickly gray-red skin is marked by faded scars, and his sharp face has high cheekbones, a pointed chin, and pale watery-blue eyes that constantly dart from threat to opportunity. Greasy dark-brown hair is pulled into a loose ponytail, with stringy strands falling around his face. His long pointed ears include a single tarnished silver ring in the left. He wears mismatched scavenged armor, including a dented steel breastplate cinched over a threadbare brown tunic, patched leather greaves, cracked boots, and a tattered dark wool cloak. Crude dwarven runes cover his forearms. A notched shortsword hangs at his hip, a curved dagger rests in his belt, and a bulging leather satchel hangs from his shoulder.
Mannerisms
Bokk moves in quick, jerky motions and rarely stands with his back to an open room. He speaks rapidly, often correcting himself mid-sentence, and laughs a little too loudly at the jokes of people who outrank him. When lying, he touches the tarnished ring in his left ear. When frightened, he begins counting exits, weapons, and possible witnesses under his breath.
Personality
Bokk is a coil of nervous energy, always scanning the room, measuring people, and searching for the next advantage. He is quick-witted, suspicious, and eager to please anyone with authority, though his flattery is usually a calculated investment. He speaks with rapid bravado that often collapses into anxious muttering when challenged. Bokk is not cruel for pleasure, but he is perfectly willing to be cruel when cruelty improves his odds of surviving.
Ideals
Control. The world belongs to those who prepare for betrayal before it arrives. Mercy is a luxury, and loyalty is simply another word for a debt that has not yet been collected.
Bonds
The old military insignia he carries belonged to the officer who first recognized his usefulness. Bokk will protect it, and the surviving members of that company, only because their existence validates his rank and gives him leverage.
Flaws
Bokk assumes every kindness is a trap and every ally is waiting for a better offer. He cannot resist taking advantage of weakness, even when doing so creates an unnecessary enemy. His hunger for security makes him cowardly at the worst possible moments, and his fear of being powerless can drive him into reckless betrayals.
Quirks
Background
Bokk was orphaned before he was old enough to remember the names of his parents. He survived among hobgoblin warbands, caravan guards, and mercenary companies by learning the habits of people who carried weapons. He was never the strongest soldier in a line, but he noticed who was tired, who was afraid, and who was about to betray their commander. A whispered warning at the right moment, a stolen ration, or a conveniently misplaced report carried him farther than brute force ever could. Eventually, he earned a place in a disciplined military company, not because he inspired loyalty, but because he understood how to make himself useful to officers and dangerous to rivals. As a ranger, Bokk became the company's pathfinder, scout, and tracker. He learned to read trampled grass, cold ashes, broken branches, and the silence of birds. He has hunted deserters, raiders, fugitives, and sometimes witnesses. His soldier's insignia opens doors, while his nervous charm and carefully cultivated debts keep those doors from closing too quickly. He has no grand dream of conquest or glory. He wants a position secure enough that no one can starve him, punish him, or discard him again. Yet every promotion only gives him another enemy, and every favor he collects becomes another chain around his neck. Bokk calls this prudence. Those who know him call it fear wearing a uniform.
