Appearance
Kaelen stands roughly 6 feet 1 inch tall, broad-shouldered and powerfully built. His weathered tan skin is scarred across the left brow and jawline. Short, messy dark hair is streaked with gray, framing steel-gray eyes that miss little. His face rests in a permanent scowl. He wears dark, battered chain mail beneath a black cloaked mantle, with faded Onyx Host markings worked into the armor. His equipment is functional, intimidating, and worn by hard use.
Mannerisms
Kaelen speaks in clipped military phrases and rarely raises his voice. He studies exits, hands, and weapons before faces. When someone boasts, he silently measures the distance between them and the nearest piece of cover. He cleans his blade whenever a conversation becomes emotional.
Personality
Kaelen speaks bluntly and without empathy. He dismisses others as weak until they prove otherwise, prefers solitude and the company of steel, and treats every relationship as a potential liability. Beneath his controlled cruelty is a buried instinct to protect the helpless, an instinct he despises because it reminds him that he is not as empty as he pretends.
Ideals
Strength is the only currency that matters. The strong shape the world, and the weak are shaped by it.
Bonds
I carry the last keepsake of the only person I ever truly respected. They died because I was not there to stop it.
Flaws
I equate intimacy with weakness. I would rather push people away than risk needing them. When fear or grief surfaces, I turn it into cruelty before anyone can recognize it.
Quirks
Background
Kaelen Duskbane served for years in the blackened livery of the Onyx Host, an army feared for its discipline and remembered for its cruelty. He rose through the ranks not because he inspired loyalty, but because he understood command. Orders were tools, soldiers were resources, and victory was the only proof that mattered. When the Host was betrayed and destroyed in a palace coup, Kaelen survived by fighting through the burning barracks and leaving behind everyone who could not keep pace. He walked away from the ashes carrying a dented officer's insignia and the last keepsake of the only person he ever truly respected, a battlefield commander who died because Kaelen was not there to stop it. Since then, Kaelen has worked as a sellsword, accepting contracts too brutal, dishonorable, or politically dangerous for respectable warriors. He once slaughtered an entire bandit stronghold after its leaders betrayed their employer, and the story made his name valuable to the desperate and terrifying to everyone else. More recently, he was hired to put down a rebellion before it could ignite. He succeeded, but the look in the eyes of a dying boy, a child who reminded him of the soldier he might once have become, left a rare crack in the wall around his conscience. Kaelen now seeks power through control, determined to carve out a legacy of feared honor. He does not want to be loved. He wants to be remembered as a man who never bent the knee.
