Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with a weather-beaten face, yellowed eyes, tangled black hair, and a thick beard threaded with bone charms. His skin is marked by old claw scars and ritual cuts. He wears battered leather armor beneath a dark, fur-lined cloak, carries a wooden shield painted with a crude black beast symbol, and keeps a collection of severed heads fastened to a heavy belt. His posture is hunched and predatory, as if he is always restraining something enormous beneath his skin.
Mannerisms
Varkesh constantly sniffs the air before speaking, tilts his head like a listening animal, and strokes the severed heads on his belt when considering a decision. He addresses trees, corpses, and animals as though they are senior members of his faith.
Personality
Varkesh is watchful, contemptuous, and strangely patient. He speaks softly even when describing violence, treating murder as a practical form of natural philosophy. He is fascinated by fear, respects creatures that defend their territory, and shows open disdain toward anyone who claims to be civilized. Around animals, he becomes almost gentle, though his affection is possessive and unsettling.
Ideals
Ruin. All order is a lie, and every law, kingdom, and sanctuary deserves to be torn apart so that the strongest truth can emerge from the wreckage.
Bonds
The first wilderness shrine where he swore himself to Malal still calls to him in dreams. He will return there one day to present the greatest head he has ever taken.
Flaws
He believes mercy is merely cowardice wearing a clean face. He cannot resist humiliating the weak, desecrating symbols of authority, or escalating a situation when a crueler choice is available.
Quirks
Background
Before he learned the secret names of roots and storms, Varkesh was a hunter from a remote woodland clan. He lived by tracking elk through snow, sleeping beneath rock overhangs, and reading the language of broken branches. During a winter famine, his clan sacrificed their weakest members to appease the spirits of the forest. Varkesh discovered that the spirits were not benevolent guardians at all, but hungry powers that rewarded cruelty and punished weakness. In the aftermath, he abandoned his people and began wandering beyond the known trails, seeking a god who embodied the savage truth he had witnessed. He found that god in Malal, whom Varkesh worships as the black beast of contradiction, hatred, and ruin. Through forbidden rites, Varkesh has gained the form of a black werebear. In his human form, he hunts those he considers hypocrites, tyrants, and prey pretending to be predators. He preserves the severed heads of his victims on his belt as trophies and offerings, whispering their names to the wilderness before moving on. As an Outlander, he has crossed countless borderlands, learning every trail, ravine, and hidden spring, while carrying the promise that civilization will eventually be dragged back into the dark.
