Appearance
Torbel is a broad-shouldered but quietly built water genasi who can almost pass for human at a distance. His skin has a perpetual damp sheen, as though mist clings to him even in dry air, and his dark blue-black hair hangs in weightless, wave-like strands that never seem to become fully dry. His eyes are pale sea-glass green, with pupils that narrow like those of a deepwater creature when he is angry or frightened. He dresses in practical versions of noble clothing, favoring layered blue and gray fabrics, silver clasps, and a long coat marked with his family's crest. His hands are usually cool and wet, and faint beads of water gather across his fingers whenever he casts a spell.
Mannerisms
Torbel speaks with careful, formal diction and often pauses before answering, as though composing a diplomatic statement. He smooths his cuffs whenever nervous, keeps one hand near his arcane focus during tense conversations, and lowers his voice when using healing magic as if afraid of disturbing the water within it.
Personality
Torbel is courteous, observant, and more comfortable helping from the edge of a room than standing at its center. He remembers small details about people, especially their injuries, preferences, and fears, but struggles to speak honestly about his own. He is fascinated by common customs and quietly studies how people greet one another, argue, forgive, and form friendships. Though he tries to appear dignified, his concern for others often overrides his training, leading him to step into danger or interrupt powerful people when someone is being mistreated.
Ideals
Compassion. Privilege means nothing unless it is used to protect those who have none. Torbel believes healing is a responsibility, not a favor, and that a person's worth is proven by what they do for others rather than by bloodline or appearance.
Bonds
He will risk almost anything to protect his younger sister, the only member of House Veyr who defended him without reservation. He also carries his family's signet ring, not as a symbol of pride, but as a reminder that he must decide what the Veyr name will mean when he returns.
Flaws
Torbel is terrified of public humiliation and may overreact when mocked, cornered, or treated as an outsider. He hides insecurity behind excessive formality, and he can be judgmental toward people whose manners seem crude, even while desperately wanting their acceptance. When his emotions overwhelm him, his magic becomes difficult to control.
Quirks
Background
Torbel was born into House Veyr, an old noble family whose influence was built on river tolls, maritime trade, and generations of carefully arranged alliances. His family expected him to become a polished representative of their interests, someone who could charm a council chamber and turn every conversation toward profit or prestige. Instead, Torbel was a quiet, damp-skinned child with strange hair, an awkward presence, and little of the carefree confidence associated with many water genasi. He learned courtly etiquette, history, and rhetoric, but he never learned how to make himself feel at home among his own people. Even at family gatherings, he felt like a guest who had been invited out of obligation. His magic first appeared during a fever that nearly killed his younger sister. Torbel laid a trembling hand against her brow, and cool water flowed from his palm in a radiant veil. The fever broke before dawn. His family called it a blessing, and some whispered that a divine soul had chosen him. Torbel was less certain. His magic was not always gentle. Water sometimes burst from his hands when he was humiliated, and once he flooded a banquet hall while trying to silence a cruel cousin. The incident became a scandal, and his family quietly encouraged him to leave until his reputation could be repaired. Torbel accepted the exile as an opportunity. Carrying his arcane focus, his signet ring, and a carefully packed noble wardrobe, he set out to find a place where his strange gifts might help people rather than embarrass his house. He travels as a healer, reluctant courtier, and apprentice adventurer, hoping to understand ordinary people and perhaps discover whether belonging is something inherited or something one can choose.
