Varos is a Chthonic tiefling with skin the color of damp slate and thick, blunt horns that sweep backward like obsidian slabs. He is exceptionally muscular for a scholar, possessing broad shoulders and hands calloused by both manual labor and martial training. He wears heavy scholar's robes that have been practicalized with leather straps and iron buckles to keep his movement unhindered. A faint scent of old library dust and cooling ash follows him, and his eyes are a flat, pale grey that rarely show emotion.

Stoic, literal, and remarkably blunt. Varos prefers the company of stone tablets to the company of people. He treats every interaction as a transaction of information and has little patience for pleasantries or metaphors. He is not unkind, but he lacks the social intuition to notice when he has offended someone, usually following a social blunder with a blank stare and a slow blink.

Varos was born into a subterranean clan of Chthonic tieflings who served as the physical laborers for a great mountain archive. While his kin were content with their work, Varos spent his rest hours memorizing the location of every scroll and codex in the library. He became a self-taught sage, his mind absorbing complex theories while his body grew strong from hauling granite storage chests. His obsession with forbidden architecture eventually led him to a scroll that didn't just contain knowledge, but a doorway. To save the archives from a subterranean collapse he had accidentally triggered, Varos struck a bargain with a being of the lower planes. He traded his social grace and what little luck he had for the strength to hold up the collapsing ceiling and the magic to seal the breach. Now, he travels the world, ostensibly a sage seeking lost lore, but functionally a debt-collector for his patron. He cares little for the opinions of others, finding books more reliable than people and raw force more dependable than clever words.
