Appearance
Po is a lean, compact human man with warm brown skin, black hair worn in a short topknot, and an alert, open face. His hands are callused from years of climbing, staff drills, and travel, while the rest of him moves with economical precision. He wears layered ochre and charcoal travel robes beneath a weathered green cloak, with a quarterstaff strapped across his back. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice his breathing first. He draws a quiet breath through his nose before answering difficult questions, and when startled, his usually steady voice becomes unexpectedly soft rather than loud.
Mannerisms
Before answering a difficult question, Po inhales slowly through his nose and pauses as though listening to distant weather. He keeps his hands folded loosely at his waist when standing still, counts footsteps under his breath on unfamiliar ground, and lowers his voice when angry instead of raising it.
Personality
Po is patient, observant, and unfailingly courteous, especially toward people who are frightened or overlooked. He enjoys practical jokes that require no cruelty, collects local sayings wherever he travels, and treats navigation as a form of storytelling. His kindness is active rather than sentimental. He will mend a broken cart, carry an injured stranger, or stand watch through the night without making a speech about it.
Ideals
Mercy is a discipline, not a feeling. The strong should make the road safer for everyone who follows.
Bonds
He carries a small brass compass that belonged to his lost caravan and refuses to abandon anyone who is stranded, lost, or being hunted on the road.
Flaws
Po tries to solve every problem by taking responsibility for it himself. He is slow to ask for help, suspicious of comfortable certainty, and can become quietly judgmental toward people who waste food, shelter, or safe roads.
Quirks
Background
Po was born in a small human caravan that crossed the borderlands between settled kingdoms and high mountain country. His family traded salt, tea, and hand-forged tools, and he learned early that survival depended less on strength than on noticing what others overlooked. He could hear a loose wheel before it failed, read a storm in the smell of the wind, and remember every bend in a trail after seeing it once. When a winter avalanche destroyed the caravan route, Po was separated from his family and found shelter in a remote monastery whose monks taught him that balance was not stillness, but the ability to keep moving without losing oneself. He remained at the monastery for years, studying breath, discipline, and the merciful use of force. His training was interrupted when raiders began using the mountain passes to prey on isolated settlements. Po left the monastery with his teacher's blessing, carrying a simple staff and a promise to keep roads open for those who could not defend themselves. He now travels as an outlander by choice, sleeping beneath unfamiliar stars, guiding lost people through dangerous country, and trying to prove that compassion can be practiced as rigorously as any martial art.
