Appearance
A broad-shelled male tortle with weathered ochre-and-olive scales and a shell marked by concentric pale bands, as though shaped by years of sun and salt. His hands are thick and blunt-clawed, with polished nails and calluses from hauling ropes, tending shrine stones, and wielding an axe. He speaks in a low, patient rumble, but when angered his breath becomes audible and forceful, each word pushed out like air through a bellows. He wears simple priestly vestments beneath a travel-worn cloak, with a wooden holy symbol tied at his throat.
Mannerisms
Törek pauses before answering difficult questions and exhales through his nose in a long, deliberate breath. When seated, he instinctively angles his shell toward the nearest wall. In moments of anger, his normally quiet voice becomes a booming rumble and his breathing grows loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.
Personality
I am slow to anger, slow to trust, and extremely difficult to move once I have decided where I stand. I treat strangers as potential pilgrims until they prove themselves cruel. I enjoy repetitive work, quiet hymns, and practical acts of kindness, but I have little tolerance for people who use eloquent words to excuse cowardice.
Ideals
Protection. A prayer is only worth the breath used to speak it if it leads to shelter for the vulnerable.
Bonds
The riverside shrine that raised me must never fall into profane hands. I carry a small stone from its foundation and will return it only when the shrine is safe.
Flaws
I mistake patience for moral superiority, and when someone mocks faith or harms the helpless, I become frighteningly certain that only force can teach them respect.
Quirks
Background
Törek was hatched in a riverside tortle community whose oldest shrine stood on a stone platform above the flood line. His first lessons were prayers, tides, and patience. He learned to carry water for pilgrims, polish the shrine bells, and recite the names of the dead without stumbling. The elders expected him to become a quiet keeper of sacred places, but Törek discovered that devotion did not always mean stillness. When raiders threatened the settlement, he took up the ceremonial axe kept beside the altar and stood between the villagers and the road. He was frightened, yet the fear sharpened into a deep, thunderous fury that drove the raiders away.
“His first lessons were prayers, tides, and patience.”
