Appearance
Vamuk Oakenborn is a broad-shouldered male dwarf with a carefully braided russet beard threaded with small bronze rings. His dark brown hair is shaved close at the temples and gathered into a short topknot. He smells faintly of cedar shavings, lamp oil, and cinnamon tea, a combination he considers perfectly respectable. His voice is deep and measured, with the resonant quality of someone accustomed to speaking in stone halls. When rattled, he stops breathing for a heartbeat before speaking in an unnervingly precise whisper. He wears layered blue-gray robes reinforced with leather panels, sturdy traveling boots, and a belt hung with chalk, ink vials, folded maps, and a rune-carved iron wand.
Mannerisms
Vamuk taps the end of his wand against his thumb while thinking and silently counts doorways, windows, and exits whenever he enters a room. He carefully straightens crooked books, labels unfamiliar objects, and pauses before answering questions as though consulting an invisible index. When angry, his breathing becomes shallow and his voice drops to a whisper.
Personality
Vamuk is patient, observant, and unfailingly polite, especially when disagreeing with someone. He approaches conversation like research, asking precise questions and remembering small details others overlook. He has a dry sense of humor, a soft spot for apprentices and laborers, and an almost religious respect for well-organized shelves. He prefers prevention to heroics, but once someone is in danger, his calm scholarship turns into relentless action.
Ideals
Knowledge is a lantern, not a throne. Learning matters only when it is used to protect people who cannot protect themselves.
Bonds
The lost expedition team is still alive somewhere beyond the sealed observatory, and Vamuk will risk almost anything to find them. He also carries his family's first measuring compass, a humble wooden tool that reminds him that great works begin with careful attention.
Flaws
Vamuk treats uncertainty as a personal failure and can become insufferably exact when frightened. He has difficulty abandoning a theory once he has invested time in it, even when evidence turns against him. He also secretly believes that, given enough preparation, he can prevent every tragedy, a conviction that makes him reckless when the future refuses to cooperate.
Quirks
Background
Vamuk Oakenborn was born beneath the mountain city of Kharak-Dur, into a family of master woodworkers who believed that every useful object should reveal the patience of the hand that made it. Vamuk showed little talent for carving, but he possessed a tireless fascination with the marks his parents used to measure, join, and strengthen timber. Those marks became his first symbols, and symbols became language, history, and eventually magic. A visiting human scholar recognized his gift and arranged for him to study at a surface academy, where Vamuk became a specialist in lost scripts, ancient wards, and the practical applications of arcane theory. His years as a sage were shaped by a disastrous expedition into a buried dwarven observatory. Vamuk and his companions uncovered records describing a magical catastrophe that had been deliberately erased from several histories. When the observatory's protective enchantments awakened, Vamuk survived by using a divination he had only partially mastered, but three colleagues were trapped behind a collapsing stone seal. He has never accepted the official account that they died. Now a master wizard of the School of Divination, Vamuk travels between archives, ruins, and threatened communities, using foreknowledge not to control the future, but to give people a chance to choose a better one.
