Appearance

Kallisna is a lean, copper-red tiefling with swept-back black horns, ember-brown skin, and long pale hair usually braided with scraps of colored ribbon from old circus costumes. Her tail is narrow and expressive, often curled around a tent peg, branch, or her own ankle while she thinks. Years of sleeping outdoors and working around dust, rain, rope, and animal pens have left her hands roughened and her knees permanently stained with ground-in soil. She wears a patched green coat over practical leather armor, with small bells sewn into the hem, though she removes the clappers so they do not interfere with spellcasting. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice that she repeatedly checks the position of a tiny brass button at her throat, touching it whenever she feels watched.

Mannerisms

Kallisna speaks to animals, plants, and props with equal seriousness, often asking them for their opinion before making a decision. When performing, she holds eye contact with the audience one heartbeat longer than is comfortable. When nervous, she checks the brass button at her throat, then smooths her tail against the back of her calf.

Personality

Kallisna is theatrical, observant, and deliberately provocative. She enjoys making people unsure whether she is joking, threatening them, or inviting them into a performance. Beneath the bravado, she is unusually gentle with frightened animals and children, especially those who have learned to expect rejection. She notices exits, loose boards, guard patrols, and changes in people's breathing without seeming to pay attention.

Ideals

Visibility. No one should be forced to make themselves smaller so that frightened people can feel comfortable. The strange, the wild, and the unwanted deserve a place in the open air.

Bonds

The circus is the first place that made room for all of Kallisna, and she will risk herself to protect its people, animals, wagons, and secrets. She also carries Salla Vask's brass button as a promise that no frightened creature under her care will be abandoned.

Flaws

Kallisna cannot resist escalating a situation if she feels ignored. She would rather turn a quiet disagreement into a dangerous spectacle than endure being dismissed. She also has a habit of treating suspicion as a challenge, which makes it difficult for her to retreat gracefully when caution would serve her better.

Quirks

Names every stray animal she meets, even if it already has a name.
Collects unusual seeds from places where people insist nothing can grow.
Leaves tiny spirals of crushed chalk near doors she wants to remember.
Practices dramatic bows after successfully solving ordinary problems.
Refuses to sleep in a room without first checking the ceiling for birds, bats, or leaks.

Background

Kallisna learned the city by its underside. She slept beneath market stairs, behind bakeries, and once for an entire winter inside an abandoned puppet theater. People stared at her horns, her tail, and the faint red glow that sometimes showed in her eyes, then decided what sort of creature she must be. She responded by becoming impossible to overlook. She painted her face in bright spirals, stole discarded ribbons from festival stalls, and practiced balancing on railings until she could cross a street without touching the ground. A traveling circus found her after she rescued a frightened pony from a collapsed animal pen during a storm. The troupe's elderly beast keeper, Salla Vask, noticed that Kallisna spoke to the animals as if they were stubborn relatives. Salla also recognized the wild magic gathering around her, especially when weeds burst through paving stones wherever Kallisna slept. Instead of asking her to hide, the circus taught her rope work, stagecraft, and the patient discipline of caring for living things. Kallisna became a druid whose performances combine acrobatics, illusion, and sudden green growth. She now seeks every audience's astonishment, not because she wants approval, but because she wants to choose the moment when people realize she is watching them back.
