Appearance
Gregory Maison is a lean, weathered human man with olive skin, sharp gray-green eyes, and shoulder-length black hair streaked with silver. His narrow face is framed by an uneven beard, and ink stains permanently mark his fingers. He wears a practical chain shirt beneath layered scholar's robes, with a battered shield bearing a faded constellation and a holy symbol suspended from a cord around his neck. His expression is usually thoughtful, distracted, or faintly amused.
Mannerisms
Gregory adjusts his spectacles even though they are not present, taps his holy symbol whenever he is thinking, and speaks to books as if they are stubborn colleagues. When surprised, he begins explaining the historical context of the danger before reacting to it.
Personality
Gregory is curious, irreverent, and relentlessly analytical. He asks invasive questions with the sincere belief that accurate information is a form of kindness. Beneath his dry humor is a compassionate man who notices overlooked suffering and feels compelled to intervene, although he often disguises concern as criticism.
Ideals
Truth belongs to everyone. No priest, monarch, or scholar has the right to lock away knowledge that could save lives.
Bonds
He is determined to recover the missing final volume of the Saint Orison Archive, which contains the names of every person who has ever received a divine vision within the region.
Flaws
Gregory treats personal secrets as research material, including secrets that are not his to disclose. He is also incapable of leaving an unsolved mystery alone, even when solving it is dangerous, tactically foolish, or deeply insulting to someone with a sword.
Quirks
Background
Gregory Maison spent most of his adult life in the upper stacks of the Saint Orison Archive, where he catalogued forbidden genealogies, translated damaged temple inscriptions, and argued with dead authors in the margins of their own books. He had always considered religion a field of study rather than a matter of devotion. Gods, to Gregory, were historical forces, political institutions, and unusually powerful entities with excellent publicists. That opinion changed when a collapsed vault buried him beneath a ruined observatory. Trapped for three days without food or light, he heard a calm voice reciting a prayer he had dismissed as primitive superstition. The prayer led him to a hidden passage and saved his life. Gregory emerged from the ruins with no clear understanding of which deity had answered him, only a profound conviction that knowledge without action is another form of ignorance. He now travels as a cleric and itinerant researcher, collecting sacred fragments, investigating miracles, and testing the claims of every temple he visits. He is genuinely willing to help people, although he prefers to describe healing as field research and divine intervention as a repeatable phenomenon. His chaotic nature makes him suspicious of institutions, including churches, and he follows no doctrine unless it survives scrutiny.
