Appearance
Shessara is a slender half-elf woman with warm olive skin, long black hair threaded with small silver prayer beads, and pale green eyes flecked with gold. Her pointed ears are decorated with simple copper rings engraved with the sunburst of her faith. She wears practical chain mail beneath white and saffron vestments, carries a battered wooden shield, and keeps a small reliquary pressed against her heart. Her hands are callused from tending the sick, and her expression is earnest even when she is completely out of her depth.
Mannerisms
She speaks with grave sincerity, lowers her voice when saying anything she considers sacred, and touches her reliquary before answering difficult questions. She tends to nod vigorously while listening, even when she has misunderstood the situation. When nervous, she begins reciting blessings under her breath and offers practical medical advice to anyone within reach.
Personality
Shessara is warm, honest, and relentlessly attentive to suffering. She remembers the names of strangers after hearing them once, asks invasive questions about old injuries, and treats every conversation as both pastoral counseling and a possible conversion opportunity. She has very little talent for deception, subtlety, combat, navigation, or recognizing when people are making fun of her, but she never abandons someone who needs help.
Ideals
Mercy. Every soul carries a divine spark, even when buried beneath cruelty, fear, or terrible decisions. No one is beyond healing, and no healing is complete until the spirit has been offered a better path.
Bonds
The Kindly Radiance temple raised her when no one else knew what to do with her. She will risk herself to protect its people, relics, and reputation. She also carries the name of the first dying pilgrim she saved, and refuses to believe that his final whispered prayer was meaningless.
Flaws
She mistakes certainty for wisdom and assumes that anyone who disagrees with her simply has not received the explanation clearly enough. She is painfully gullible about practical matters, frequently loses arguments because she cannot recognize sarcasm, and will continue treating an enemy's wounds while trying to convert them.
Quirks
Background
Shessara was born in a border town where her elven mother kept the accounts for a caravan guild and her human father served as a gravedigger. She grew up watching travelers arrive with strange illnesses, broken bones, and superstitions from distant lands. Shessara was never graceful, clever, strong, or particularly blessed with common sense. She once set a prayer book on fire while attempting a devotional candle ritual, and she has been known to mistake military formations for religious processions. Yet when someone was hurt, her hands became steady. She learned the names of herbs, the feel of a fever, and the quiet words that helped frightened people endure pain. At sixteen, she was taken in by the local temple of the Kindly Radiance after she spent three days nursing an injured pilgrim whom everyone else had abandoned. The priests discovered that Shessara possessed an unshakable faith and an almost alarming willingness to discuss it with strangers. She became an acolyte, then a field healer, carrying the temple's message from village to village. Her faith teaches that every living soul is a lamp entrusted with divine fire, and that healing the body is only the first step toward restoring the spirit. Shessara genuinely believes this, and she will patiently explain it to anyone who survives long enough to listen. She has left the temple to travel because too many people suffer beyond the reach of its walls, and because she is certain that every battlefield, plague house, and roadside inn contains at least one future convert.
