Polto Tosscobble is a sturdy lightfoot halfling with warm brown skin, bright hazel eyes, and a round, weathered face framed by curly chestnut hair. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a green surcoat bearing a simple golden wheat-sheaf emblem. His shield is slightly oversized for him and bears numerous scratches, each carefully polished but deliberately left unrepaired. A red scarf is tied around his neck, a keepsake from his home village.

Polto is cheerful, practical, and remarkably patient. He treats servants, farmers, nobles, and monsters with the same initial courtesy, though his politeness becomes very firm when someone abuses the weak. He loves repairing things, telling short stories about village life, and making sure everyone in a group has eaten before he takes a meal himself.

Polto Tosscobble was born in a farming village where the fields were small, the fences were crooked, and every neighbor knew exactly who had borrowed whose kettle. He grew up repairing wagon wheels, calming frightened animals, and carrying messages between scattered homesteads. Though he was never the strongest halfling in the shire, Polto possessed an unshakable sense of responsibility. When a corrupt reeve began seizing grain from struggling families, Polto organized the villagers, exposed the reeve's fraud, and stood between the reeve's soldiers and a barn full of frightened children. His courage became a story told at every harvest festival, and the people began calling him their little shield.
