Appearance
Tarek is a broad-shouldered male goliath standing just over seven feet tall, with slate-gray skin, pale stone-colored eyes, and a heavy black braid tied with strips of white temple cloth. His chain mail is carefully scrubbed but visibly repaired, and his shield bears a simple sunburst over a mountain line. He carries himself with solemn care despite his awkwardly thin frame for a goliath, as though every movement is a prayer he is trying not to perform incorrectly.
Mannerisms
Tarek pauses before answering difficult questions, touching two fingers to the rim of his holy symbol. He speaks in a low, measured voice and addresses even enemies as if they might still choose to become better people.
Personality
Tarek is gentle, formal, and intensely attentive. He notices who has not eaten, whose bandages are too tight, and which companion is pretending not to be afraid. His kindness is practical rather than warm, expressed through sharpened tools, repaired straps, and standing watch long after everyone else has gone to sleep.
Ideals
Protection. A law that does not shield the helpless is only a weapon in the hands of the powerful. I will uphold order, but never at the cost of mercy.
Bonds
The mountain temple that raised him is his true family. He carries a fragment of its broken altar and will risk everything to rebuild the shrine and protect its surviving pilgrims.
Flaws
Tarek obeys rules even when doing so causes needless suffering. He is slow to forgive anyone who breaks a promise, and he quietly assumes that his own pain is less important than everyone else's.
Quirks
Background
Tarek was born among a highland goliath clan that measured worth by endurance, courage, and the ability to carry another person home. He was never strong by the standards of his people. His joints ached in cold weather, his grip failed during climbing trials, and he was often the last chosen for contests of strength. What he lacked in physical power, he possessed in patience. He could sit beside an injured hunter through an entire night without complaint, and he remembered every name spoken over the dead. A traveling priest noticed this gift and brought him to a mountain temple devoted to justice, mercy, and the keeping of sworn promises. At the temple, Tarek became an acolyte, copying prayers in a careful, cramped hand and tending to pilgrims who arrived frightened or wounded. He learned that faith was not a feeling that made a person fearless. It was a discipline that made a person act while afraid. When raiders burned an outlying shrine, Tarek took up a sword and shield despite knowing he was poorly suited to either. He swore the Oath of Devotion beside the ruined altar, promising that his word would be stronger than his body. Now he travels as a paladin, seeking those who have been abandoned by law or protection. He is not a dazzling champion. He is the one who stays in the doorway, holds the line, and refuses to let the wounded be forgotten.
“He was never strong by the standards of his people.”
