Appearance
OakRaven is a tall, broad-shouldered human man with weather-browned skin, thick dark hair threaded with silver, and a neatly maintained beard. His hands are unusually distinctive, broad-palmed and permanently stained with green and brown from years of handling sap, roots, ash, and medicinal herbs. His fingernails are short and uneven, and his fingers move with careful patience even when he is standing still. He wears weathered leather armor beneath a moss-green cloak, carries a wooden shield painted with a simple black raven, and keeps a sprig of oak leaves tucked into his beard.
Mannerisms
OakRaven studies the nearest living thing whenever a conversation becomes tense, often touching a leaf, examining a crack in wood, or watching an insect cross the ground. Before answering a difficult question, he exhales through his nose like a settling animal. He rarely raises his voice, but when he does, everyone nearby notices.
Personality
OakRaven is quiet, observant, and difficult to hurry. He treats strangers with cautious courtesy and animals with the assumption that they are already communicating clearly. He prefers practical kindness to declarations of affection, repairing a boot, preparing bitter medicine, or standing watch through the night. Although he appears detached, he remembers small details about people and becomes intensely protective once he considers someone part of his circle.
Ideals
Balance. Growth without decay becomes tyranny, and decay without renewal becomes despair. Both must be honored.
Bonds
The woodland that sheltered him is slowly being changed by roads, mines, and careless magic. OakRaven will protect its oldest trees and the people who depend on it, even when those goals appear to conflict.
Flaws
He assumes that every problem has a natural consequence and sometimes waits too long to intervene, believing people must learn from the harm they cause. He is also quietly judgmental of wastefulness, especially wasted food, broken tools, and needless words.
Quirks
Background
OakRaven was born in a farming village at the edge of an ancient woodland, where the people treated the forest as both neighbor and threat. As a boy, he learned to read weather in the shape of clouds and danger in the silence of birds. His natural patience led him to an aging hermit who lived beyond the tree line, a former healer who taught him the properties of roots, fungi, and bark. OakRaven stayed long after his lessons were complete, eventually becoming the keeper of the hermit's shelter and the quiet guardian of the surrounding woods. During a winter of sickness, OakRaven discovered that the villagers' exhausted fields were being poisoned by runoff from an abandoned mine. He also learned that the forest's sudden hostility was not vengeance, but an attempt to contain the spreading contamination. Rather than destroy either side, he spent months redirecting streams, treating the sick, and persuading the villagers to abandon the worst-struck land. That experience gave him his central revelation, nature is not gentle or cruel, it is responsive. Since then, he has left his solitude to study disturbances that threaten the balance between settlement and wilderness. He travels with the patience of a hermit and the watchfulness of a raven, speaking rarely, but never without purpose.
