Make one melee weapon attack with a shortsword or unarmed strike, using Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls. If you take the Attack action with an unarmed strike or monk weapon, make one unarmed strike as a bonus action.
- Martial ArtsLevel 1
Your practice of martial arts grants you proficiency with unarmed strikes and monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that do not have the two-handed or heavy property. You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons. When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or monk weapon. This die increases as you gain monk levels.

Appearance
Taller than most men at 6 feet 5 inches, with a powerful, heavily trained build rather than a wiry monk's frame. His skin is sun-browned from years of military marches and mountain training. He has a broad face, close-cropped dark hair, calm brown eyes, and a thin scar crossing one eyebrow. He wears a plain, well-maintained black robe and kimono-style training wraps, with no ornament except a faded military insignia sewn inside the collar.
Mannerisms
Miro stands perfectly still when listening, with his hands folded behind his back as though awaiting inspection. Before entering a room, he quietly measures its exits with a glance. When angered, he becomes more polite, not less.
Personality
Miro is reserved, observant, and unexpectedly gentle with animals, children, and anyone carrying something heavy. He speaks like a soldier giving a report, but his attention is unusually complete. He remembers the names of cooks, stable hands, and camp followers long after officers have forgotten them. Beneath his calm is a competitive streak he keeps hidden until someone questions whether his master's teachings made him strong.
Ideals
Discipline. Strength has value only when it is governed by purpose. The hand that can destroy must first learn when not to strike.
Bonds
Master Ojun Sada gave me a life beyond the army, and I will defend his name even from those who worship it falsely. I also carry the folded regimental colors of the unit that first sent me to war.
Flaws
I mistake hesitation for weakness and sometimes force a confrontation simply to make an uncertainty end. I also have little patience for commanders who give orders from safety while others bleed for them.
Quirks
Background
Miro Araneko was not raised for greatness. He was the eldest son of a miller in a river town, a quiet, broad-shouldered boy who preferred carrying sacks to speaking at table. At seventeen, he was conscripted into the border army and sent away before he had learned how to say goodbye properly. Military life gave him discipline, but it also revealed that strength alone was not enough. He could break a shield line, yet he could not control his temper when frightened, and he could march for three days but still lose every fight against a patient opponent. After a disastrous skirmish in the Keshan foothills, Miro was ordered to deliver a message to Master Ojun Sada, an aged monk whose name had become a measure of impossible skill. Soldiers called Ojun the greatest monk who had ever lived. Ojun accepted Miro as a student only after making him sweep the same courtyard for a full year. Under that master's instruction, Miro learned to turn his soldier's mass into balance, his obedience into discipline, and his fear into attention. He became Ojun's final pupil, and the old master often said that Miro might someday be the second strongest monk in history, provided he stopped trying to prove it. Miro has left the mountain now, carrying his master's unanswered question with him: if power is not used to dominate, what is it meant to protect?
