Appearance
Kaisen is a tall, broad-shouldered warforged built from dark iron, lacquered wood, and aged brass. His armor bears understated motifs from a vanished clan, including a faded flower crest etched into his breastplate. Thin lines of warm amber light glow beneath the seams of his body, and his face is an expressionless steel mask with a calm, almost human gaze. He carries an enormous clan-era sword called Hajia no Ontachi, its grip wrapped in weathered blue cord. He smells faintly of cedar oil, forge smoke, and rain on metal. His hands are large and exceptionally well maintained, with carefully polished knuckles and calligraphy-brush precision when handling delicate objects.
Mannerisms
Kaisen pauses before answering personal questions, as though searching an archive that no longer contains the needed record. He touches the flower crest on his breastplate when someone mentions home. Before battle, he checks the straps and weapons of every ally within reach, never his own. When anxious, he silently traces calligraphy strokes with one metal finger against his palm.
Personality
Kaisen is quiet, patient, and unfailingly attentive to the needs of others. He rarely speaks about his own pain, but he notices every exhausted guard, frightened child, and wounded traveler in the room. He treats promises as physical objects, something that can be damaged by careless handling. Though centuries have made him difficult to surprise, a gentle word about home or waiting can still bring an almost imperceptible tremor to his voice.
Ideals
Protection. A warrior's purpose is not to win glory, but to become the wall behind which another person can live. If I must stand alone, I will still stand.
Bonds
I will find Yumi's grave, or uncover the truth of what happened to her, even if it takes another century. Until then, I will be the wall behind which the abandoned and defenseless can survive.
Flaws
I mistake endurance for wisdom. When someone asks me to stay, I hear an order to abandon my duty, and I fear that choosing happiness will make me betray someone who needs protection.
Quirks
Background
Before iron replaced his flesh, Kaisen was a stubborn village boy from the foot of the mountains. He was never the fastest student of the sword, nor the most naturally gifted, but he endured every fall and rose for the next lesson. His father taught him that a blade was not an assassin's tool or a symbol of glory. It was a wall, held between danger and the people who trusted you to stand. Kaisen carried that lesson into war, returning from campaigns with new scars, fewer companions, and an increasingly hollow understanding of duty. Then there was Yumi, the calligrapher's daughter who met him on a bridge and made silence feel like home. She waited through every campaign until one day she told him that she no longer wanted to live beside a window, waiting for him to return. She wanted him to choose a life with her. Kaisen could not understand how to abandon the clan, and when she asked him to leave until he understood, he assumed she would still be there when he came back. Three months later, she had vanished without a grave, a letter, or a witness who could tell him where she went. He left his sword at an altar, entered the mountains, and found ancient smiths who offered him a second life. They bound his soul to iron so he would have the time to find Yumi's resting place and tell her he understood. Centuries later, he remembers only her name, her voice, and the certainty that she was his home. He continues walking, protecting the lost and searching for a grave that may never be found.
