Appearance
Brodus is a towering 6'5" human with a narrow, blade-scarred face, iron-gray eyes, and wind-tossed dark hair usually tied back with a strip of black leather. He wears a fitted coat of dark leather armor over sea-worn clothes, and a sleek raven is almost always perched on his left shoulder, beak clicking softly when strangers approach. A faint silver sigil, like a cracked crown, rests over his sternum, visible only when he breathes hard or draws on his pact.
Mannerisms
He leans slightly toward doors and windows before entering a room, as if listening for the shape of trouble. When thinking, he taps two fingers against the raven's perch on his shoulder, then answers questions only after the bird clicks its beak once or twice.
Personality
Brodus speaks with calm, measured confidence, as if every sentence were a card laid on the table face up. He is oddly courteous to dockworkers, gravekeepers, and anyone else who lives close to the edge of catastrophe. He enjoys small acts of defiance, a stolen apple, a forbidden door opened, a perfect insult delivered politely.
Ideals
Fate is a blade with two edges, and a person earns their future by choosing which edge to grab. Brodus believes destiny is real, but it should be insulted, tested, and occasionally cheated.
Bonds
Max is the one person Brodus will not abandon, not for gold, glory, or the promises of the blade. He also feels an unsettling loyalty to the raven, as if harming the bird would break some unnamed truth about his pact.
Flaws
Brodus treats danger like a wager he is mathematically certain he can survive, and that confidence gets people hurt. He hides uncertainty behind dry humor and will lie about what the raven knows rather than admit he is afraid of the answers.
Quirks
Background
Brodus Ghent was born in a port city where storms were treated like visiting nobles, feared, respected, and remembered. He and his twin brother Max were inseparable as children, two lanky boys who could climb rigging before they could shave, and who learned early that a quick grin could open more doors than a fist. Max chased daylight and honest work. Brodus chased the places people avoided, the alleys behind chandlers, the decks where the dead were said to whisper, the old shipwreck chapel at low tide where he first heard a voice speaking through rusted steel. The blade that answered him was no ordinary heirloom, but a black-edged longsword said to have been lifted from a grave salt-soaked beneath the harbor. Brodus did not so much accept the pact as get caught in it, one bad night, one desperate bargain, one promise to survive long enough to keep Max from making the same mistake. Since then, the weapon has hungered through his hand, and a raven with one pale eye began appearing at the edges of his life until one night it landed on his shoulder and never left. Brodus tells people the bird is a pet, but he knows it is something older, a witness, perhaps a guide, perhaps a spy. He has no idea whether the blade chose him, cursed him, or mistook him for someone else, only that every time he draws it, the sea seems to remember his name.
